Using third party resources as a reference helps a lot sometimes. There may be some special features that a UX designer sees the need to implement and the developer isn't just sure how to do it and how to over come a special challenge that the feature carries, At these times a third party reference that has done the job right or at least close to what the designer needs could help both the developer and the designer a lot. In some cases the developer may try to reverse engineer how the third party web app works and solve the issue he was facing, or the UX designer might find that there is a better way to implement such thing and that third party web app or website has done it.
