More executives have been reaching out to me via text for coaching. Text-based coaching demands a different level of listening and carefully considered questions. For instance, asking, "What is the real issue underlying this challenge for you?" helps executive reflect deeply and gain quick insights. The indirect nature of text coaching allows the executive to focus on context without getting bogged down by filler words usually associated with the content of the situation. I actually think theres an opportunity to apply the 3rd principle from James Clear's Atomic Habits here: Make it easy: Make the habit simple to perform. How can we stack a session into what they are already doing? Do they have an hour journey in a private vehicle you can join them in? Do they go for a morning walk? Once you establish opportunities in their existing schedule, you can optimise an activity to accommodate - leaving electrical appliances behind, or off, for example And like in the case of the walk, you might find that moving can activate the brain and allows it to think and process in a way that sitting still doesn't

Reflecting after coaching sessions is essential. However, I encourage looking beyond mere notes. Consider how each session resonates with your core values and purpose. How can you make any learning stick? Simply by highlighting the learning and then making it a point to apply it! Right after a coaching session taking 2 minutes to note down the key action points, can enable quick implementation. This can then help to build the foundation for follow-up in subsequent sessions. The idea is to make each coaching session count.

I work with business leaders and entrepreneurs specifically on this issue. There’s two main problems. The first one is Parkinson’s Law. We have shift how we prioritize and re-think about time. Until that happens, no improvements can be made. The next is delegation. It’s gonna be challenging for small business owners who don’t have a lot of people to delegate to or feel they have the resources to delegate. For executives in larger businesses, The challenge can often come down to trust and their expectations. When you start asking a few basic questions around these issues and they bottlenecks they cause, it’s not hard to get the root cause of the problem.

I would highly recommend assessment and tailor coaching based on the assessment findings. These individuals are rather busy and it is best that you are result oriented in your coaching.

I always ask this question: What keeps you up at night? And, sometimes it isn't business but a knotty personal situation. We work on creating strategies and options to deal with those situations first, before launching into business topics.
