How do you update your career goals?

I have a unique way of looking at the way I am growing. I measure the following KPIs. 1. What are my peers doing, what kind of roles are they in? & measure my growth. 2. I leverage LinkedIn to understand where well known CXO leaders were when they were as experiences as I am presently. 3. What am I paid right now va what are my peers from IVY league colleges paid. 4. I have conversations with people around the globe & understand how the’re looking at their careers. 5. Most importantly I have an end goal in sight & the timeline within which I wish to reach there. 7. I seek feedback from peers to identify Developmental plans & set clear goals on how to improve on them. 8. I have a time bound approach where I seek help from mentors

I regularly update my career goals by reflecting on my current skills, interests, and the trends in my industry. I set aside time every few months to review and adjust my goals, ensuring they align with my personal growth and the evolving landscape of my field. It's a dynamic process that helps me stay focused and motivated.

The initial step in revising your career goals involves deep reflection on your current circumstances. Drawing from my article on LinkedIn, "Learning Through Life: How Every Situation Shapes Your Journey," I emphasize the importance of introspection. Throughout our journey, we encounter a multitude of experiences, encompassing both favorable and challenging moments. Each encounter bears valuable lessons that mold our progress and contribute to our personal evolution. While positive experiences frequently motivate one to aim higher, it is equally essential to introspect during difficult times and derive wisdom from them. By embracing the lessons from every experience, we become better equipped to navigate the twists and turns along the way.

Exploring options and understanding the next set of strategies to move ahead in your career is imperative. Try this, 1. Get a coach 2. Scan the industry 3. Listen to career gurus and pundits and their podcasts 4. Compare career paths 5. Research the web to understand complementing degrees to help you plan and learn better 6. Scan your college and alum groups, company alumni’s 7. Lastly network network and network Understand that managing career is exceptionally important and exceptionally critical to adapt with time and keep experimenting and trying out new things This also gives you an opportunity to keep your options open as much as possible and not to get into a limbo or sorts

Having clear goals is the target here Try the following 1. Have short term and long term goals 2. Be specific 3. Quantify the impact of your goals on your career or career path 4. Be specific in terms of time for example, “Reach here in 5 years time” 5. Measure to start and measure to assess your progress 6. Kee altering your targets from time to time. We are all humans and every time the best of things may not work out for us 7. Learn to be flexible 8. Consistently push yourself

Feedback is supercritical. It is important to get a coach who can help us self introspect and let us know where we are going right and where we are going wrong. Feedback serves as a very critical tool as well as very critical fuel that can move your career into the right direction. In my view feedback is the only resource just like a medical health report card that can provide a real as is picture of things and either help us improve or appreciation in terms of our achievements. Quite often it is seen that feedback is resistant. It is also super critical to give feedback in a way that people understand that it is not personal rather professional feedback is one critical resource that can enable a large set of changes in any individual.

The next step after feedback is reviewing one’s progress. As we set smart goals for ourselves, it is also important that in a periodic session we look at the mirror in terms of the actual versus the plan. What is the plan versus what did we achieve? It is important to look at the progress in order to recalibrate our efforts. This helps us keep at pace in terms of looking at the larger scheme of things about our goal Setting process. The review mechanism is super critical in order to help us understand what the critical gaps are. But it is also important to understand the gaps and adapt to the new way after one identifies the caps, this process is called being flexible and adaptive to change and responding to the review process

Focus less on what you want to achieve or how to get there, and more on WHO you want to become. Success can mean different things to different people, so make sure your ultimate goals reflect the true future you desire, the kind of person you want to be. Remember that hope is the key to persistence and resilience! So, dare to think on a perfect scenario. Envision how it would look like: if you were there already, what would you notice? How would you realize you've made it?

The only constant is change. There has never been a truer phrase. I sometimes feel like I had very little to do with some of the watershed moments in my career. In some instances, I'm very sure I actively chose the opposite of what came to be. And that has made my life all the more enriching. I think what is important is to understand what impact you want to have in life and work hard to towards this. Be bold in making decisions that move you towards this goal, but be flexible to be able to react to changing conditions.
