How do you ensure that subcontractors adhere to the same safety standards as your plant operations team?

One thing I have learned is it is very important to have clients Safety Team work closely with the subcontractors for a period of time to ensure they are aware of the difference between the subcontractors program and that of the clients

It is very important that everyone is inducted. The client must provide training, instructions and information for the subcontractors so that they can be familiar with the plant hazards associated with operations. They must include their Emergency evacuation plan, Safety data sheet, Road safety rules, Polices and their standards of operations that must be complied to, before allowing anyone to enter their premises. Visitors must also be Inducted.

To ensure subcontractors adhere to safety standards, implement clear contract clauses on safety, conduct regular safety audits, provide training on plant-specific safety protocols, monitor subcontractor performance closely, and enforce immediate corrective actions for any safety violations.

Here's the question I think we should be asking. “Are we clearly communicating our expectations, and setting the example we want our contractors to follow?" If the answer is no, we have a much larger problem on our hands. Most people will perform up to the bar that is set for them. So, we should make sure we are providing expectations that are: Clearly communicated: If a message can be misinterpreted, it will be. Simple: Keep instructions simple. Have you ever tossed out a set of instructions and ‘winged it’ because they were too complicated? Me too. Relevant: Focus on what matters. If I'm building a scaffold, I don’t need to read the procedure for changing a car tire. Finally, always care about our people, they’re our business!

Build, review and communicate the site specific safety plan. Make sure to train and coach the field employees. Come up with strategies that keep employees engaged during coaching. Also review OSHA and state local standards that could apply to the job site in order to mitigate incidents and/ or accidents.

Engage with all the subcontractor safety Team, make them part of your safety plan, pre-planning and safety inspections. Create a clear venue of communication with every sub-safety representative, go out and field inspect operations, review safety inspections together and work together to find solutions to the problems found.

Sub-contractors sometimes believe that it's output that is most important. Explicitly demonstrating shutting down operations (if required) to address safety concerns sets the right tone to them that you value safety over productivity.

A good way to foster a good safety culture is to not only report bad finding, but also to report and reward good safety practices. For example, if you see a good safety practice, congratulate the employee, take a picture to record the instance and apply some kind of reward in order to motivate and enhance the safety culture.

Starting with setting the bar high and ensure that the expectations are clearly expressed from the beginning of a project or having subcontractors onboarded. As well as having not only the right supervision but the right AMOUNT of supervision, coupled with continuous pertinent training.

Require subcontractors to report all incidents, near misses and hazards. Include sub contractors in incident investigations and corrective action plan.
