How can you manage team frustration during a change initiative?

Here are my 3 tips to channel that frustration productively during change initiatives 1. Firstly, validate their feelings. Recognize that frustration often stems from care and attachment to their roles. Use it as a bridge, not a barrier. 2. Open communication channels, ensuring every voice is heard, every concern addressed. Reinforce the vision, but be flexible in the journey. 3. Celebrate small wins, and most importantly, ensure transparency. Finally Navigating change is a group effort, and every emotion, even frustration, has its role to play.

Here are two more tips on managing team frustration during a change initiative: Listen Actively: Encourage open and honest communication by actively listening to your team members. Allow them to express their concerns, fears, and frustrations without judgment. Sometimes, team members just need a safe space to vent their emotions. By listening, you can better understand their perspectives and address their specific needs. Acknowledge and Validate Feelings: Change often brings about various emotions, including fear, uncertainty, and resistance. Acknowledge these feelings as normal and valid. The WHY and the HOW is important - without a doubt. But it's HOW you communicate the message. It's so incredibly cringey when leaders sugar-coat their message with personal examples that seem half-hearted and unauthentic. Just be extremely clear and be honest. Best practice - put yourself in the shoes of your staff and write down questions "you" would ask if given the news. Don't overdo it - trust me, less is more in most cases. Just be clear, honest, and be ready to answer questions.

Depending on how sensitive/confidential the change is, bring trusted individual contributors into the planning before rolling out. You'll hear real concerns and support from people who will be impacted. Get every layer of management & HR on the same page before rolling out. Have the change communicated by leaders closest to the front lines and backed up by senior leadership. Collaborate on talking points and practice.

The team is the agent of change, not just the recipient. Without the team, no change turns into action, nor does it transition into daily life. Help the team understand why the change is necessary and how it fits into a larger context. A single change is often not isolated, but part of a broader development trend. Ensure you and your team also focus on your learning. What do you need to learn in the near future? What new practices to develop? Reflecting on these questions together with the team not only helps them commit but also actively drive the change.

This allows you to keep the feedback flowing because people believe it is listened to and acted upon. Finally, celebrate the little wins so that the team can see the progress being made.

As you learn with your team, provide feedback on "what's working" and "what's not working". Use this knowledge to create double-loop learning to apply into the way change is occurring.
