How can adaptability help you succeed in human resources?

My mother always said when life deals you lemons make lemonade. I carry this throughout all parts of my life - take the unknown things and make them work! This includes learning from and embracing the unexpected. When there is a challenge there is a solution. A huge turnover rate in a specific job area? I have learned to research, come up with ideas then present them to solve the problem. Without looking at the obstacles and how to handle them, we can't move forward.

Adaptable people develop targeted skill sets, processes, and frameworks that allow them to quickly and efficiently deal with different situations as they arise. Being adaptable at work helps you respond to new situations, new roles, new projects, and new clients. By adapting to every situation, you basically need to change your style and step out of your comfort zone in order to overcome the challenge ahead of you. In regards to HR & Recruitment, it basically relates to the changing market demands post Covid and the increase in the demand for more & more Skilled Talent by the Clients and also an overall shift in the fundamental Work Culture across industries.

In my time working in recruitment, I've found that staying adaptable really keeps me in the loop with the latest recruitment trends. Also, navigating diverse scenarios is a key aspect of HR work, ranging from employee relations to recruitment challenges. Adaptability empowers HR professionals to tackle each situation with an OPEN MIND and and flexibility.

Being adaptable in HR means quickly adjusting to new situations. It helps us meet different employee needs, stay updated with changes in the field, and handle unexpected challenges. This flexibility makes us better at creating a supportive and efficient workplace!

Adaptability is NOT only a key skill for Human Resources, it is a KEY SKILL for all jobs. In fact it is a key skill for life. Period. And specifically for HR, it allows HR professionals to adapt to generational talents. Every generation grew up with different circumstances, background, technology evolution and economic environment. Gen Z for example prioritises passion, work life balance and effective use of their work efforts to generate income and sustainability. Their perspectives are totally different from say, Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials and everywhere in between. Without adaptability, HR will be using one size fits all policies and practices, resulting in lop sided results and reactions from staff and new hires alike.

In human resources, you are often working to support employees. You can plan and strategize, but human behavior will always throw in a surprise or two. Ask any HR professional, and I'm sure they have a story or two. Whether it's implementing new HR technologies, adjusting policies to accommodate remote work trends, or addressing the needs of a diverse workforce, adaptability ensures that HR can stay ahead of the curve. It also helps foster a positive and resilient workplace culture, as employees see that HR can effectively respond to challenges and changes.

The best way to get feedback on how adaptable you are is asking this question to your peers; "Do you consider that I am a risk taker?" Someone who is adaptable, inevitably need to learn new things, try new things, i.e. take some risks. If the perception by others among your peers that you are not taking risks, means you are not truly being adaptable.

Assessing adaptability involves reflecting on your response to change, feedback, and new challenges. Consider how you've navigated past transitions, embraced new technologies, and adjusted strategies based on evolving needs. Seek feedback from colleagues and analyze your ability to learn quickly and apply insights. Additionally, evaluate your comfort level with uncertainty and your proactive approach to staying informed about industry trends.

Introspect to identify areas where you drag your feet, or get angry when asked to do something. That will give you an indicator of your willingness to be adaptable.

Improve adaptability by first improving your listening skills. Most people hear 2 voices in their head. The speaker and their own voice. The problem with poor listening skills is when they are thinking (and internally talking) at the same time as the speaker they are hearing. It is impossible to listen to 2 different songs at the same time...unless the 2 songs are exactly the same song play at the same time. So in order to improve listening skills, it is paramount to mouth (parroting) exactly what the other person is saying at the same time in your own head; thereby forcing the mind to stop "thinking" but start "listening" to the SAME message. I coined this Verbatim Listening. When this is achieved, adaptability takes on a new possibility.

Adaptability is one of the most critical life skill. Our lives and work are dynamic thus being able to pivot and reprioritizing can help achieve any missing links. I have found that practicing gratitude grounds me in addition to giving me a self confidence boost. A tranquil mind is more open to new or conflicting ideas, according to several research. One can also find peace in the outdoors, in art, in picking up new skills or languages, or in conversing with friends. Maintaining a growth mindset is the goal.

Seek feedback from colleagues or supervisors on your flexibility in handling diverse tasks or challenges. To demonstrate adaptability, one must first show they are able to do different jobs WITHIN the same company. That is, you are either volunteering to take on more responsibilities than your job title says so, or trying out new projects that are not within your job scope. These experimentation forces you to become more adaptable; with time management, new deadlines, job functions, diversity of teams etc. And they also become great conversational piece at networking sessions with Human Resources or bosses, even at interviews. Doing your "next" job in your "current" job without the job titles is the best way to demonstrate adaptability, within your resume.

To showcase adaptability in HR, actively seek professional development opportunities, stay informed on industry trends, and proactively suggest and implement innovative HR solutions. Additionally, emphasize your ability to pivot strategies based on evolving organizational needs, demonstrating a keen awareness of the dynamic nature of the workforce landscape.

Adaptability is a personal trait, and less to do with the department. Adaptability as a trait is required for every function in the organization as well as outside the workplace, especially in these turbulent times. It's not only HR that has to have adaptability.

Consider volunteering in non-profit organisations, churches, religious organisations, community clubs etc to add a further dimension of adaptability. It shows you care for the society at large and have a more balanced view than others when you volunteer at societies with good causes.

I loved to hear it! With our personal and professional worlds always changing, learning to adapt is critical.
