Retiring manager needs to list down all the current activities under his control. List of uncompleted project at hand. Status of uncompleted tasks at hand. List of stakeholders and their relationship with the projects. Teams details project wise. Technology tools and documents. Milestones & its status, finances &its status.All project timelines & targets. Challenges and opportunities. Retiring manager must make open discussions, share his experiences with his successor and see that no vital information got missed. Better he discuss with management too. Share his impressions on team strengths and support needs. Share key points of the projects needs. Must keep himself available for any missing link at convenience. That's it....

I always try to make a good selection and recruiting process for candidates, therefore I do an assessment of their skills from the very beginning, and from there a career path for them if they show to be high-potential candidates. All young engineers are ambitious, and this is okay. Usually, engineers prefer to talk to machines instead of people, so we must cultivate the art of communicating with people in them. To complement further, I strongly recommend educating them in Finance and Accounting, because they will have to interact with bean counters and must master the art of how engineers translate our work into cash.

When everybody knows a manager will retire, the whole situation creates expectations and gossip, human nature at its best! If the company selects an outsider, demotivation may emerge among people who thought they had a chance to rise to that position. If a company selects an internal candidate, demotivation may emerge among the rest of his/her peers because someone may consider himself a better fit for the job. Human nature again! Think well about which path is best for the company, do a professional evaluation and performance of internal and external candidates, and choose the best! Then communicate your decision and stress the strengths and skills of the chosen one and ask for everybody´s support. Make the chosen candidate successful!
