Todo esto supone, en la mayoría de los casos, determinar metodologías adecuadas. Una metodología no te asegura el éxito, pero si una buena praxis. Sólo la experiencia permite no sólo adecuar las metodologías sino también crear algunas y elevarlas a nivel de estándares. Mientras uno aprende un arte, oficio o profesión luego de terminar los estudios debe ser muy prudente porque no todo es obvio.

Establishing clear goals acts as a guiding framework, enabling you to evaluate and prioritize design choices along the project timeline. This is good practice for all key aspects of the project, not only sustainability. In essence, you can take a broad concept into actionable steps, ensuring a coherent and impactful approach to creating sustainable spaces, from inception to realisation. Simple right?! 😁

Achievement requires expert deliberation and decision-making to determine the optimum devices crucial to innovating sustainable development. Normative design and problem-solving processes quickly become limited when we address them through conventional logical reasoning and critical thinking modes. Instead, design and construction professionals must achieve innovation by strategic thinking. For example, we must ratchet the fundamental goal of achieving permanency and durability while elevating adaptive and flexible designs to meet the rapid pace of change. Equally essential, we must use evidence-based design to benefit human and environmental performance. It is no longer enough to determine our purpose but what strategies will achieve it.

Like a chess match, we must anticipate potential impacts and plan subsequent actions to innovate strategically. Considerations for embodied energy, lifecycle value, net-zero energy, carbon targets, and affecting optimum sustainability all interact together, yet changing one component produces a different outcome than another. Logical reasoning helps judge the advantages of various options, but strategic thinking produces calculated solutions. Critical thinking commonly dominates architectural discourse because it primarily concerns constructing buildings. In comparison, strategic thinking initiates astute, wise, and adept design inquiries to realize interconnected, decisive tactics to achieve specific goals in various change scenarios.

It is important to take into account the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of the innovative options that we will offer to the market and they will be better if these results are compared with the impact of conventional products. In this way, we can prove that our design is more sustainable in a transparent way.

Ciertamente, cada diseño y cada intervención urbana son únicos en su contexto, ya sea desde una perspectiva económica, geográfica o social. La eficiencia sólo se logra midiendo los indicadores y comparándolos contra alguna línea base, y si no existe, construirla y demostrar cuál es la base de comparación, de otra manera, será sólo una buena idea, con las mejores intenciones, lo cual no es malo en si mismo, sólo que cuando al final se realiza una ingeniería de valor, son los primeros elementos que son suprimidos, es decir aquellos que no hay cómo demostrar su beneficio.

This leads to missed opportunities for making remarkable architecture and diminishes our relevance by insisting on building old-school. Building information modeling and integrated project delivery eliminates error-ridden documents, added cost and delay claims, and waste-intensive U.S projects estimated at $4 billion annually, equivalent to 200 million metric tons or 550 Empire State Buildings. A major cause of waste is complicated building design, toxic and exotic materials, disregard for modularity and pre-fabrication, gluttonous building sprawl, open space and water resources consumption, and increased automobile dependency—all climate change causes.

Efficiency in sustainable design involves optimizing resource use and minimizing waste. This can be achieved through energy efficiency (design, material selection, manufacturing, and product use), water efficiency (reuse, saving technologies, process optimization), material efficiency (reduced use, recycled content, design for disassembly), waste reduction (durability, repairability, minimal packaging), transport efficiency (local sourcing, efficient logistics), circular economy principles (design for longevity, disassembly, and recycling, product-as-a-service), and systems thinking (holistic approach, life cycle thinking).

A circular design framework* is a useful tool that allows agile iteration between product development and sustainability metrics. *A complete framework has a clearly stated set of rules, principles, and a scoring system, all data-driven. The purpose of these tools is to be easily understood and implemented by people who don't necessarily have a circular engineering background.

From my experience , rarely does everything in your early schematic design stay completely stagnant all the way through to the final design. There is a push and pull from multiple parties between engineers, clients and other people in your team. It’s important to be aware of this early and except to have to change things to adapt to feedback. A simple practice I learned through this is to save your progress and have separate files for each change you make. This way if there was one specific change you can find the most relevant model file and create a new iteration more easier.

As design iteration and critical thinking are foundational to architecture, strategic thinking is crucial to addressing future human and environmental complexities. Present and future dynamic change rates dictate we can no longer iterate designs based on logical reasoning and fixed criteria alone. Catastrophic climate events dictate design iteration must address resiliency as much as sustainability. Complicated human and ecological forces form increasingly complex relationships, far extending beyond traditional design methods. The future demands a more expansive approach to architecture that is more flexible, adaptive, and responsive to unpredictable and unprecedented changes in environmental thinking and architectural practice.

In addition to this, collaboration unlocks a powerful tool for sustainable design: empathy. While logic is crucial, with collaboration, you can engage with: 1. Our blindness beyond creating buildings blocks our ability to gain meaningful revelations in collaborations outside the ideological design object. It weakens us to dispensable levels, ensuring ineffectiveness and contentment with an irrelevant societal role. A steadfast determination to pursue iconic gratification instead of solving society’s problems blocks the profession from making greater things happen. Artfully expressive forms do not cause societal esteem; our choices to construct a better world signify significance. We must embrace collaboration and remember the issue is not about the right design method but the best way to practice. We cannot solve problems alone—isolated buildings do not solve anything, nor do isolated architects.

It’s important to stay up to date because sustainability is constantly changing and many breakthroughs happen as new technology from another discipline is introduced. Staying on top of this information could give you an advantage in using new sustainable technology in your relevant field.

Architecture must learn to advance beyond the objectification of the singular building and deal with societal problems in urban settings with variable-scaled projects and interdisciplinarity. The architectural project is more than a learning process involving new materials, technologies, and methods. Instead of self-evident reasoned propositions, the design domain must establish an emergent process where the final form becomes evident only when collaborative, integrated, sustainable design methodologies conceive it. In the face of Anthropocenic threats, architecture must balance artistic ideas with tangible productions that materially and physically serve human and environmental needs to ensure the prosperity of future generations.
