FDM is one of those technologies that allow people to get involved with but requires a clear idea of what is needed for. People tend to look at it with the expectation of “It’s a machine that works out of the box and I can get my ideas no problem”, but lack the necessary background so when they try to use materials such as ABS or CF/GF filaments something can be dangerous to their health. More than being open to talk about it, something that is needed is that FDM needs to be approached with a careful and scientific approach. If you are able to research and read documentation about your devices, filaments, nozzles, software and recommended safety protocols, you too can partake and get your ideas to the world and even make money from them.

I think creating an open platform regardless of the hierarchy in the organisation is required. The collective views on a planned project can be really helpful as multiple perspectives can be used which can be extremely useful and even discussions on what could go wrong can be helpful too.

Keep it fun! I lead a collge robotics team and 3d printing is our backbone of manufacturing. I was getting a lot of questions about tolerancing for 3d printing so I designed and printed out a tolerance tester with square, circular, and hexagonal pegs. I then printed out a tester for all of our 6 different 3d printers. At the next meeting, it was a competition to see who could correctly match up the tolerance tester to the printer. It's not that exciting of a "game" but it got my teammates thinking about the tolerancing and playing around with different fits. Structuring 3d printing training around an activity with feedback tends to yield better results!

Display of work and recognition for it can be really helpful. I have often encouraged my juniors to come to me with any idea they have or want print, I want them to have the mentality to test the printer to its limit and understand what's possible at the current level. Some of them came with good ideas and executed them brilliantly and I think such type of things should be appreciated regularly.

One important driver for 3D printing is Open Source technology, the big boom in commercial is driven by everything from software to hardware, this was seen many times in the industry leading to explosions In technological expansion, for example when Creality open sourced their insanely popular Ender 3, and the boom of super cheap consumer 3D printers that followed and the rapid development of technologies.

Also another thing to consider is having a gold standard for the processes involved in your printing process. If you have a community then take their help in developing protocols or you can develop workflows suited to your own needs by trial and error. Once you have a validated workflow then it can act as a base for further improvent and also a baseline for assessment of print failures.
