Interoperability ensures systems and business units work together irrespective of underlying technologies. The key here is the collaboration between IT and the business units to align data architecture with organisation goals within the bounds of security and compliance requirements. Use frameworks like TOGAF to ensure consistency and standards. Document data architecture, integration points and develop common data models to standardise data representation and facilitate interoperability. Establish data quality and governance to ensure data quality, data integrity. Document metadata to facilitate data understanding across systems and functions. Integrate using middleware technology, API and Microservices to enable real time integration.

JSON is often preferred over XML due to its lightweight nature and ease of use. It’s easier to read and write for humans, and it’s easier to parse and generate for machines. Plus, JSON is a native data format for JavaScript, JSON integrates seamlessly with web applications. While XML remains a powerful and flexible tool, JSON’s efficiency and simplicity often make it the preferred choice for data interchange.

Assessing compatibility is a crucial step in evaluating interoperability. To determine if a new data architecture solution will seamlessly integrate with the existing infrastructure, it's essential to examine its ability to communicate and exchange data with existing systems, tools, and data formats. This involves checking for compatibility issues with databases, APIs, and communication protocols. Additionally, the ability of the new solution to exchange data with external partners or platforms is crucial for achieving seamless interoperability and avoiding costly workarounds or disruptions.

Flexibility is a must have to scale and build robust infrastructure to adapt change and integrate with diverse technologies. Some of the ways to achieve is to adapt widely accepted data formats like JSON, XML. Communication protocols like REST, SOAP. Implement middleware, adapt system design using SOA loosely coupled architecture. Leverage Microservices architecture to break down monolithic applications. Follow API first approach to facilitate integration across systems and use message brokers where applicable to enable asynchronous communication. Use cloud applications for scalable and flexible infrastructure. Implement CI/CD pipelines to simplify and deploy changes rapidly. Implement versioning and ensure backward compatibility.
