Often times production personnel spend all their efforts "pushing" work through from station to station when a production problem occurs. This usually helps, but often leaves personnel in downstream stations with nothing to do, and they might not even know why. Its good to train downstream personnel on the station just before the one that they are experts at. When they see a lack of product following to them, its their job to immediately react to "pull" the process through by helping in the station upstream. Applying this technique, in the long run, usually ends up being more production.

I have found that in many ways, food manufacturing lags in the use of technologies that other industries have successfully employed. Some robotic and automation technologies were not immediately cost effective in the food industry. But better technologies often come with the addition of a product quality gain, when less people are involved in processing. Labor shortages and the general rise in labor costs has created a better ROI for automation in the food industry then ever before.

Not everyone involved in a project can be in on every meeting, every phone call, etc. But having all details available to all parties, through the use of cloud based collaborative project software, saves time for everyone involved. I find you can never add too many project details, that may not be important at that moment, but are valuable at later points in a project. This documentation really is the best way to communicate and bring new personnel or contractors up to speed, if they are brought on later in the project. Everything that transpired prior is available to them. Each involved party can see their parts of a project, the scheduled time for them to do their task(s), and who is waiting on them so they can perform their own tasks

I think its important that when a trainer is training someone, that they try to understand the capabilities and prior work experiences of that person. The trainer can then draw on their personnel's skills, and help in finding the best position for that person within their production team. The trainer should not only assess and find the personnel that are just willing and capable, but find those that want to learn more to move themselves and their team forward. Train for your team's ambitions.
