Goal in a corporate is very different from football. Corporate goals have no limits, corporates work on a process and those corporates that keeps reinventing the process and path keep working towards the goal. Remember Goals are very limiting. I am saying this for aspiring young achievers and aspiring young providers.

When delegating tasks as an engineer, clear instructions and expectations are crucial. Here’s how to ensure effective delegation: Define the Task Clearly: Be specific about what needs to be done. Avoid vague instructions. Include details like scope, desired outcomes, and any constraints. Set Expectations: Discuss deadlines, quality standards, and any dependencies. Clarify the level of autonomy the team member has. Provide Context: Explain why the task matters. Connect it to the bigger picture. Share relevant background information. Ask for Confirmation: Encourage questions. Ensure the team member understands.

For an engineer leading a team on a project, there will be goals with different time scales and potentially dependent on other teams’ work products being developed in parallel. Working with your team, the calendarized goals can be established but I would build some margin at every step in the overall program’s schedule as unforeseen issues tend to pop up. Make handoffs between teams as major milestones in the program schedule so all teams are cognizant of them.

For a team's Objective to be powerful, it needs to be compelling to all its members. So we need to inspire our team and make them see how each team member's work will result in an exciting, meaningful outcome, that everyone will find personally worthwhile and would want to achieve. The common goal of any team, as it is for an individual, should be SMART, i.e. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. This represents the foundation for any high-performance team. The efforts of all team members are to be aligned in the same direction to meet the common objective or common purpose, which forms the main reason for their coming together as well as the basis for cooperation amongst them as members of the team.

As an engineer, being clear is crucial when assigning work. Clearly define your goals, divide your work into doable steps, and express your expectations in detail. Create progress milestones, offer the required tools and assistance, and use feedback loops to confirm knowledge. Proper documentation guarantees coherence and promotes effective project implementation.

Each member must understand and support the meaning and value of the team's mission and vision. For this clarifying the purpose or the “WHY “and binding it to each person's role and responsibilities augments the potential of the team. By explaining to the team, that the work they are doing is vital not just to the team, but to the organization as well, they will be motivated enough to take onus and appropriate action. When team members are told about the significance of their work, they try harder to reach the goals. They feel duty-bound to collaborate to meet the challenge at hand. We can create a sense of urgency, by impressing upon the team how their work would solve a serious problem or benefit the company.

Once you've established the Project Goals, the next step is to define the specific tasks required to achieve them. This involves breaking down the goals into actionable steps by breaking into smaller, manageable milestones or achievable steps which will help one stay motivated. These steps should be measurable, realistic, and have a deadline. Once the steps are laid out, prioritize them in the order of importance. What needs to be done first, second, and so on which will help one stay organized and focused . Now, assign the tasks and responsibilities for each step. Everyone involved should know what is expected of them and when it needs to be done. It will make it easier to measure progress as one moves towards one’s goals

The key to tapping into the potential synergy of a team is with proper delegation of tasks, based on various strengths of its members. There should be total clarity in roles and responsibilities, and the team needs to be cohesive enough in creating strong relationships with one another. Roles need to be well-defined and appropriate and should cover everything that needs to be accomplished with proper responsibility and accountability. If you don’t know what exactly you are supposed to do, you will struggle to decide what to do next. Without clearly laid out roles and expectations for each team member, they may take on a task that does not suit their experience and expertise, which will again be a sure recipe for failure.

Deadlines are essential for keeping oneself accountable and ensuring that they make steady progress towards their goals. Once you've defined your tasks, assign deadlines to each one. Be realistic with your deadlines, but also set them with enough urgency to keep them motivated. Make sure that your deadlines are specific and measurable. For example, instead of setting a deadline to "complete market research," set a deadline as "complete market research by the end of the month." This will help one stay focused and make steady progress towards their goals
