In my experience, I have found it most effective to use a positivity sandwich. Coming to the conversation with a very positive greeting. Maybe using an exclamation point. Talk about things, If they're being pessimistic, meet them halfway. On your way out, and with something encouraging and optimistic. Maybe send them a meme. I call it a win when I can get someone to smile or laugh. Life is already stressful enough. Being supportive and acknowledging others feelings is important. Equally, It is important to express your own feelings. But be careful not to stay too long on pessimistic topics. Try to convert them into opportunities or silver linings.

Consider activity-based networking - as in, joining a board, collaborating on a conference session, etc. This type of networking can take some of the pressure off (especially for us introverts), and because the networking is ongoing, the connections can become deeper and more meaningful.
