At the start of your job, you may be unsure about your lunch break or even where to get a coffee - where do I sit? Who can I talk to? Will they understand me? My solution: I found a colleague in my group to whom I shared my thoughts. "I might need some help getting to know this place in my first few days. Would you mind showing me around for the next few days?" That's it! Just be honest and don't be too hard on yourself. We all felt like that.

These tech aids can translate documents, emails, and even live conversations, making it easier to collaborate with international colleagues. English speakers need to put in equal amount of effort to understand what is being said. You don't know the language the others can speak fluently, therefore be thoughtful about actively listening to what is being said in the context and ask for clarity by recognizing that the words that are being used may be dissimilar from how you would state the same information.

On top of all the above: in a company I worked for, we would start international meetings with a set of rules. Shut the mobile phone off and alike, followed by the official language of the meeting: Bad English! For non-native speakers, this comes naturally and they relaxed. For native speakers, it is more difficult: slow down when you speak, don't use metaphors etc. This inverts the required efforts towards native speakers and non-native speakers feel more confident to contribute.
