Balancing deadlines and creativity: Feeling overwhelmed?

Being deliberate in taking 10 min each night to reflect on what the 'big' pieces are for the next days, weeks, and months helps commit (and recommit) to goals, their importance, and relative priority, on a regular basis. I personally prefer doing this the night before, because I find my body 'figures it out' when I sleep.

Break it down and start coming up with ideas for smaller tasks rather than one big one. This puts less pressure on "solving it all" in one go.

I totally agree with the tips suggested, it's pretty same the way I work, and the free, playful and restful recharging moments are a MUST in the entire process. In every case, even those moments can be flexible, as I need to allow my schedule to change according to my daily energy. I add that personally I prefer using paper and pen/pencil to schedule and visualise steps, make annotations, changes and first sketches, as I need an analogically approach to improve my creativity.

Which ever routine, or actions get you there - it is often in a relaxed state of mind where many are able to let go - and allow ideas to flow. Although this may seem counterintuitive when faced with deadlines, simply <Not work on the thing> for a little bit can really help get things back on track. The trick is to be deliberate about it and do it unapologetically - as it can take as little as 10 min to reset your creative juices!

One thing I’ve had to learn is that it’s okay to take breaks! Taking a break shakes everything up and the act of doing so may shed some clarity on a project piece that would have otherwise been overlooked or never discovered. : )

Being creative doesn't mean that creativity is a constant state of our mind, we have to feed and take care of it to allow the ideas to free appear, observe them with an open mind and create from them. For me, the silence (= no distractions or worries) and the space (= a conscious time or ambient dedicated to this) to take care of my creativity is mandatory, and they can be considered rituals or tools. I personally prefer avoiding using computer, iPad and mobile phone during those moments, and I prefer using any creative physical expression (each person has the one or more that fit better for them). For me can be automatic writing, walking, dancing or free movement, free singing or talking flow, or be still and just observe, meditating...

And let’s not forget to ask for help! Collaboration is still the spark I need to make a project great. If I restrict myself to my own box, I lose out on the opportunity to help create something great by working with and finding momentum from others. : )

Keeping calm and not feel panic is the most challenging part for me in these moments of high stress and pressure. In those moments, I prefer short productive working sessions with as many breaks I need to being able to go on. During those breaks, I try to disconnect and forget about the work, I focus on other entertaining and recharging activities including having social pleasant moments (as I usually work alone). Taking distance, perspective and talk with others helps to change the approach to the work, recharge, and see some way to solve that difficulties/block that before looked impossible to pass.

The experience will help you to learn yourself as a creative worker, which way of work fits better for you, what are your personal difficulties and talents, which parts of the work are easier and which ones are harder for you. The objective is improve everything that can be improved, and being conscious about your feelings/needings and keep open to changes, that's absolutely important and beneficial for your mental sanity and for the quality of your work.

There are many models you can follow for this, but a popular one that has worked for me is mindfulness meditation. This can be as simple as a 10 minute break, can be done pretty much anywhere, and there are tons of videos available online to help you with this. As counter-intuitive as it may seem (and having learnt the hard way) - just turning things OFF, for very short times, can really help reset your engine, cognitive function and creativity. If you are old enough to remember, you can think of it like turning off the Nintendo console and blowing into the cartridge for a few seconds.
