Our team had a fantastic visit to SuperPower Inc. in the US, a leading manufacturer of high temperature #superconducting (HTS) tape and a subsidiary of FURUKAWA ELECTRIC GROUP, one of our investors and strategic partners. We got a first-hand look at their impressive facilities and our next batch of HTS tape, all set for shipping! HTS tape is the core material for our advanced HTS magnet technology, driving our #fusion energy mission and opening up a range of exciting new applications through our TE Magnetics business division. We believe partnerships and collaboration like this will be key to delivering clean, secure and sustainable #fusionenergy. #FusionForAll #Innovation #CleanEnergyTransition

Commercialising fusion energy and our groundbreaking HTS magnet technology
About us
We are developing the technology to deliver clean, secure and affordable fusion energy in the 2030s. Tokamak Energy was founded in 2009 as a spin-off from UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). Our US subsidiary, Tokamak Energy Inc, was established in 2019. We are the only private fusion company with over a decade’s experience developing the two technologies that offer the most efficient and commercially attractive route to fusion energy; the compact spherical tokamak and high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. TE Magnetics, our dedicated HTS magnet business division, is focussed on becoming the leading supplier of HTS technology for fusion and other exciting new applications, including science, renewable energy and propulsion on land, in water air and space.

Today's Financial Times takes a deep look at our new generation high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. Tom Wilson writes, following a recent visit, how helping to develop stealth submarines is one of the several ways the technology developed for #fusionenergy can be used to transform other sectors. “What we want to do here is usher in the HTS era,” said director Liam Brennan. “We want to get those magnets out there and get them operating.” The full story is on the link below (subscription only), with lots more exciting #HTSmagnet news to follow from us next week. Stay tuned.

Tokamak Energy features in this The Guardian article looking at how the technologies and solutions being developed for #fusionenergy have ‘huge practical applications’ from propulsion to science and medicine. It reports how public and private fusion organisations are increasingly ‘reporting breakthroughs that many in the industry now think will lead to viable fusion energy’, promising ‘such quantities of clean energy that we will finally be able to leave fossil fuels behind.’ At the same time, in developing fusion power plants, ‘we are creating new technologies and solutions that can reach far beyond the task of energy generation.’ Read the full article here: 👇 https://lnkd.in/e25HzPmp

“We need to empower the next generation now in our quest to deliver fusion as a secure supply of clean and affordable energy to meet rising demand and address climate change,” says Jane Shannon, our Director of People and Engagement and new co-chair of the UK Fusion Skills Council. Future scientists, engineers, and central support staff require the skills and opportunities to enter the cutting-edge #fusionenergy industry. This goal has led to a collaboration between the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), Tokamak Energy, First Light Fusion, and 17 other commercial organisations and academic institutions to support the sector's growing workforce with 2,200 people over the next five years. The UK Fusion Skills Council’s other co-chair is Ryan Ramsey, Chief Operations Officer from First Light Fusion. “I’m honoured to be part of the UK Fusion Skills Council tasked by UKAEA with advising on and monitoring the strategic delivery of the skills and development programme,” Jane added. “Our mission is to highlight the exciting opportunities the fusion industry has to offer, plus deepen and widen the talent pool so we are in the strongest position possible for this exciting new delivery phase of fusion technology.” Nick Walkden, Head of Fusion Skills at UKAEA, added: “The challenge and opportunity presented by skills growth for fusion is one that we all share, and we are dedicated to ensuring the benefits of this important programme are felt throughout our sector.” Read the full story on the link https://lnkd.in/ej7fAdJ4 #skills #cleanenergy #energytransition #FusionforAll #fusioniscoming

Our CEO Warrick Matthews took part in an engaging roundtable discussion with Kerry McCarthy MP, Minister for Climate at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero at Culham Campus recently. After a full tour of the Culham facilities, Minister McCarthy heard from industry leaders about the huge growth opportunity fusion presents for the UK and its role in supporting the transition from fossil fuels to sustain a #netzero future. It was also a first chance for the Minister responsible for fusion energy to learn more about Tokamak Energy and its two transformative technologies: the compact spherical tokamak and high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. Our ground-breaking #HTSmagnets were seen as a great example of how spin-off fusion technologies can transform today's markets and create new ones, providing skilled jobs and opportunities across a range of industries. Thanks to UK Atomic Energy Authority for the invitation and we look forward to working with Minister McCarthy and her team as the thriving UK fusion industry continues to grow. #CleanEnergy #FusionforAll #JustTransition #ClimateAction

We’re delighted to receive a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) INFUSE award for the rapid development of advanced oxidation-resistant vanadium alloys for fusion breeder blankets in spherical tokamaks. The team will be working with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Birmingham on the project which could expand the use of these materials, enable new design avenues, enhance safety, and improve plant efficiency. The INFUSE program is focused on accelerating fusion energy development through public-private research partnerships by involving the expertise and unique resources available at DOE laboratories and universities. It is the ninth INFUSE award received by Tokamak Energy, one of eight private companies selected by the DOE as part of the United States’ decadal vision for delivering commercial fusion. Michael Ginsberg, EngScD, Tokamak Energy Inc. President, said: “Vanadium base alloys are the leading candidate materials for breeder blanket structures in fusion power plant designs flowing liquid lithium. This new project will push our understanding forward on the path to delivering clean and secure commercial fusion in the 2030s.” Jean Paul Allain, DOE Associate Director of Science for Fusion Energy Sciences, said for the announcement: “The INFUSE selections showcase our continuing commitment to the fusion industry in the U.S. and our goal to share widely unique capabilities at national laboratories and U.S. universities. Partnering with businesses and working together is a win-win for our fusion industry, the DOE, and the nation.” Follow the link for more information on Tokamak Energy’s project https://lnkd.in/exdvs4nZ And the full DOE announcement is below. #fusionenergy #FusionforAll #energytransition
