Pioneering commercial fusion energy

About us

We are developing the technology to deliver clean, secure and affordable fusion energy in the 2030s. Tokamak Energy was founded in 2009 as a spin-off from UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). Our US subsidiary, Tokamak Energy Inc, was established in 2019. We are the only private fusion company with over a decade’s experience developing the two technologies that offer the most efficient and commercially attractive route to fusion energy; the compact spherical tokamak and high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. Our dedicated HTS magnet business unit, in collaboration with key manufacturing partners, is focussed on becoming the leading supplier of HTS technology for fusion and other exciting new applications, including science, renewable energy and propulsion in water, air and space.

We’re proud to announce Tokamak Energy’s Principal Magnet Engineer Dr Greg Brittles has been awarded a three-year extension to his Future Leaders Fellowship by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The government funding is awarded to emerging leaders around the UK to commercialise their innovations and lead research into global issues such as #energy and #climate. Greg’s fellowship is for further research to enable the rapid development of high temperature #superconducting (HTS) #magnets for #fusionenergy and other applications. HTS magnets, which are needed to control the hot plasma of #fusion fuels inside a tokamak, represent a significant technological breakthrough, enabling extremely powerful and efficient magnetic fields. HTS technology can also be used to advance other sectors, including renewable energy, science and propulsion in water, land, air and space. Greg said: “I’m delighted to receive further support by UKRI under its fantastic Future Leaders Fellowship programme. I joined Tokamak Energy at the beginning of our HTS #magnet development journey, and am proud to have played a leadership role in this transformative technology. The fellowship has provided uniquely flexible support that has enabled me to lead a growing team of magnet engineers delivering rapid, cutting edge HTS magnet innovation. This has generated novel magnet technologies with several associated patent applications, and I’m excited to be pursuing the deployment and commercialisation of these magnets both inside and outside of fusion under the next phase of my fellowship.” #FusionForAll #superconductors #innovation

With the UK school summer holidays in full swing, it’s been a pleasure to welcome four groups of year 10 and 12 work experience students to spend a week working alongside our talented #engineers, #scientists and business professionals. Jacqui Dalziel, Head of Talent, said, “The students have all been incredibly engaged, full of curiosity. It’s been so rewarding for everyone involved, helping to inspire young people about the opportunities in front of them and the potential of #fusionenergy.” We've also had some fantastic feedback from the students themselves: “I really loved and enjoyed the work experience. I learnt so many new skills and was honestly blown away by the company and discovered many different roles that I didn't even know before. It has set my expectations high!”   “Thank you very much for providing me with such an amazing opportunity. I now have a much clearer picture of where I want to go and achieve within both my academic and future career.”   “My confidence has skyrocketed, and I am excited to enter the world of work when my times comes.” #FusionForAll #STEMEducation

Our team from Tokamak Energy and our U.S. subsidiary Tokamak Energy Inc. has had a great week meeting with current and potential partners at the 26th Technology of Fusion Energy (TOFE) conference in Madison, Wisconsin. Organised by the American Nuclear Society the theme is ‘The Public-Private Pivot to Fusion Energy’. Scientists, engineers and fusion industry leaders were able to discuss how recent advances in the physics basis combined with new enabling technologies have shifted the focus to the commercial delivery of #fusionenergy. The team also had the opportunity to visit the Pegasus-III spherical tokamak and HSX stellarator housed at University of Wisconsin-Madison. At Tokamak Energy, we’re developing the technology to commercialise #fusion in the 2030s. We believe that collaboration will be vital to achieving that goal and are committed to building the strong government, commercial, scientific and academic partnerships that will enable the global deployment of clean, secure and affordable fusion energy ⚡ #FusionForAll #CleanEnergyTransition

A great #magnet starts with a great design. In our latest #fusionpioneer video, Matt Bristow, Senior HTS Magnet Engineer, explains how we design and model our high temperature #superconducting (HTS) magnets using data gathered from over ten years’ experience developing the technology. We’ve created robust HTS magnet technology that can be tuned for different applications, which not only unlocks the pathway to commercial #fusion but has potential uses in a wide range of industries, including science, renewable energy and propulsion in water, land, air and space. #FusionPioneers #FusionForAll #Superconductors #Innovation

It was a pleasure to welcome State Minister Soichiro Imaeda of The Japan Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as part of a UK #fusion tour. The visit, hosted by our CEO Warrick Matthews, took in our ST40 control room, high temperature #superconducting (HTS) #magnets lab and Demo4 fusion #magnet system. Japan’s Fusion Energy Innovation Strategy sets a roadmap to commercialise #fusionenergy to help achieve its #decarbonisation goals, including wider participation by the private sector in research and development so Japanese industry will be ready to play a major role in delivering fusion power to the world. At Tokamak Energy, we have built a strong network of government, commercial, scientific and academic partners in Japan, including with FURUKAWA ELECTRIC GROUP and Sumitomo Corporation and a longstanding relationship with The University of Tokyo. Yuichi Takase, our Senior Technical Advisor, who is also Professor Emeritus, University of Tokyo, notes that fusion energy is attractive to Japan because it offers dispatchable electricity and industrial heat for the decarbonisation of heavy industry, and it does not need to be imported, contributing to energy security. “We have a common goal - to deliver clean, safe and abundant fusion energy for the world. What is more important than that? We can work together to make it even faster.”   #FusionForAll #CleanEnergyTransition

Today’s Fusion Industry Association global #fusion industry report highlights the “significant shift” in government policies and increased investment around the world, with public funding increasing by over 50%. It also highlights the growth of a skilled #fusionenergy workforce supporting our industry. Tokamak Energy is listed in the report as a world leader in two transformative technologies, the compact spherical tokamak and High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) magnets, and one of the select companies to have raised more than $200m on the path to commercialising clean, secure and affordable fusion energy. #FusionForAll #CleanEnergy #EnergySecurity

New global fusion industry report out now! Today we launch our 2024 report, giving an updated snapshot of where the private fusion industry stands. The global fusion industry has now attracted over $7.1bn of investment, with over $900m of new funds backing the technology since last year. Total public funding increased by 57% in the last 12 months to $426m, showing governments increasingly see public-private partnerships as central to making commercial fusion a reality. Companies remain steadfast in their projected timelines for producing fusion-generated electricity in the 2030s, with 89% of the companies responding to the survey anticipating that fusion will provide electricity to the grid by the end of 2030s, and 70% of the companies saying that milestone will happen by the end of 2035. Over 4,000 people around the world are now employed at private fusion companies. However, there are still major challenges to overcome and, between 2025 and 2030, two-thirds of respondents believe power efficiency will be a major challenge, while the same proportion (66%) believe funding will be a barrier to success. Read the full report to gain further insight into today’s global fusion industry and profiles of the developers. About the Report This is the fourth annual “Global Fusion Industry Report” from the Fusion Industry Association. Responses are based on answers to a survey issued to private fusion companies. This survey should be seen as a snapshot in time; a view of the industry when the survey was conducted in the second quarter of 2024. Repeating the activity year-on-year enables us to see the picture evolving. https://lnkd.in/ehrCBjPM #FusionEnergy #FusionIndustry
