Well done to our Southern team on securing a planning consent for a new Retirement Living community in Shopwyke Lakes, Chichester. The 55-unit development will be part of a welcoming entrance for the the wider Shopwyke Lakes masterplan residential quarter. This new initiative in Hampshire seeks to deliver employment, community facilities, localised retail with associated access and open space. In addition to the facilities close by, the site is near the city centre, with good pedestrian and transport links providing older people easy access to a wide selection of amenities. Great work Gary Toomer, David Williams, Poppy Hood MRICS and all involved in achieving planning permission! #planningpermission #retirementcommunity #retirementliving

Our CEO John Tonkiss was recently featured in Inside Housing discussing the need to increase the delivery of retirement properties. John talks about how we need to supply more than four times the current number of properties built for older people each year to unlock benefits for first-time buyers, the NHS and the economy, as well as provide older people in the UK with a broader choice of suitable homes. The last Government commissioned the Older People’s Housing Taskforce, and it is essential that the new government turns the recommendations enshrined within this unpublished landmark report into reality. "It would re-energise the housing market through the release of thousands of existing homes onto the market." Our CEO John Tonkiss was pleased to have the opportunity to talk about older people’s housing in Show House magazine this month, noting the importance of the report by Prof. Julienne Elizabeth Meyer CBE and the older people’s housing taskforce. As John states, good retirement housing is vital to the health of older people and the wider housing market, and it must be a priority for the new Labour Government. #retirementhousing #olderpeopleshousing #taskforce

MEET THE INTERNS: Isaac Beattie-Edwards is studying for a BASc in Global Sustainable Development at Warwick University. He joined as an intern with our Health Safety & Environment and Sustainability team, working closely with Lindsay R., who leads on our Sustainability Strategy. He has really enjoyed getting out on construction sites as part of one of his projects regarding waste management, alongside his work researching and compiling relevant HS&E legislation, and designing signage to raise awareness for biodiversity enhancements for our developments. He says "The work has really helped build my own confidence, and Lindsay has helped me to engage in internal and external meetings, even supporting me to lead my own meeting with one of our waste contractors, something which went very well, and I am excited to do more of!" Well done to Isaac on his great work, and wishing him the best for the remainder of his internship, and his future career! #internships #greatplacetowork #futuretalent

We have recently exchanged contracts with Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council to proceed with a 53-unit retirement housing development at the Ryecroft, a larger site that is being redeveloped as part of a once-in-a-generation regeneration in the town. Subject to planning permission, this will be our very first scheme in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Land Director James Hanna says “We are delighted to have worked in collaboration with Newcastle-under-Lyme Council over the last 18 months and we are looking forward to promoting our proposal for the Ryecroft site. We hope to create a new vibrant community for older people in the heart of the town centre and alongside the remainder of the wider regeneration plans. Simon Tagg, Leader of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, said: “There has been national and international interest in the Ryecroft redevelopment and I am delighted that such a prestigious provider of homes is coming to Newcastle.” The Ryecroft redevelopment will also include a hotel, other accommodation from Aspire Housing and a multi-storey car park. It will boost local economy and bring a new vibrancy to the town centre. Well done to James Hanna and the team on a great new site offering affordable housing to older people in the area. 📷Pictured below Cllr Stephen Sweeney, James Hanna of McCarthy Stone and Cllr Simon Tagg. #retirementliving #affordablehousing #retirementcommunities

Our Head of Care & Lifestyle, Amanda Greenaway, has recently written for the Daily Mail discussing the benefits and costs of care at home for older people. Amanda heads up our care services, where we provide extensive support across our developments, including our 120 housing with care schemes that have on-site CQC-registered care teams assisting our homeowners. Amanda draws on her expertise and experience to explain the options available to older people in the UK, how to set up care at home, and the potential costs. She talks about the benefits of care at home, over and above moving into a care home, saying: “Care at home helps people maintain a degree of independence and their preferred routines for as long as possible.” Well done to Amanda and thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge to support older people who want to know the choices available to them!
