“The prospect of a new home in a bomb-free area fills us with hope, knowing our children and grandchildren will be able to live without the risks that once defined our lives.” Nguyen Thi Hoa is a farmer from Cu Nam, Vietnam. In 2015, MAG cleared 22 million square meters of land around her village, removing more than 11,100 unexploded bombs. “My children used to play outside and herd cattle without knowing the dangers of unexploded bombs – I was terrified for their safety,” she recalls. “Even in my own garden, there were cluster munitions.” Today, Hoa, and many others, are rebuilding their lives and livelihoods in safety and their children can look forward to a safer future. Ahead of the Twelfth Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions in September, Mine Action Review has published a new report on the global progress of cluster munition survey and clearance. Some key findings here ⬇️

This week, MAG attended the 10th Conference of States Parties to the #ArmsTradeTreaty. Today, MAG Ukraine and APOPO hosted UNDP Ukraine at the launch of a new project that will accelerate mine clearance on de-occupied territories. Funded by the Netherlands and Spain, a team of 16 technical survey dogs and eight women handlers will survey 1,800km of previously occupied land, making it safe for communities to return. Why use Technical Survey Dogs (TSDs)? 🔴 A trained dog can clear 1,500m2/day – far outpacing a human deminer’s 20-50m2/day 🔴 TSDs ignore scrap metal and only detect explosive scent – meaning they can be much faster at finding landmines than metal detectors Read more:
