A new synthetic antibiotic, cresomycin, has shown promising results in early tests against flesh-eating bacteria and other multidrug-resistant pathogens. 💊 Researchers from the University of Illinois Chicago and Harvard University discovered that cresomycin is effective in killing various resistant bacteria strains in cell cultures and mice. This antibiotic works by binding tightly to the bacterial ribosome, disrupting protein synthesis even in bacteria that have developed resistance mechanisms. In tests, cresomycin effectively killed multidrug-resistant bacteria, including those responsible for many healthcare-acquired infections. In mouse models, it significantly improved survival rates and reduced bacterial loads compared to control groups. The research team, supported by a $1.2 million grant from CARB-X, plans to continue developing the compound for potential clinical use. We look forward to seeing how this development in our industry plays out! 💡 #drugdevelopment #iPharm #antibiotic

The BBC have reported that a drug used to extend the lifespans of laboratory animals by nearly 25% is being tested on humans, a breakthrough that scientists hope could also slow human ageing. The treated animals were healthier, stronger, and developed fewer cancers than the untreated ones. The drug, currently in human trials, targets interleukin-11, a protein that increases with age and contributes to inflammation and aging. How could this impact human life? 🕢 If the drug proves effective in humans, it could significantly increase lifespan, potentially adding years of healthy life. 💪🏻The drug might help maintain muscle function, reduce cancer incidence, and improve overall health, contributing to better quality of life in older age. 🚫The drug could offer a more feasible way to slow ageing compared to caloric restriction, which is difficult to maintain. Widespread use of anti-aging drugs could have significant societal impacts, including ethical considerations about extending human life and the implications for population dynamics and healthcare systems. 🤔 Leave your thoughts on this interesting topic in the comments section below. 💬 #iPharm #drugdevelopment #drugtesting
