Christel House International (CHI) led a spotlight framed on the global challenge of youth unemployment and economic mobility on July 18 anchored around 'World Youth Skills Day' (July 15). The session demonstrated how the CHI model has evolved to help kids strengthen their self-efficacy, positively impacting their life outcomes. Over 25 years ago, CHI was founded on the belief that children thrive at school when they are in good health, eating well, and are provided with a safe, nurturing environment. The key takeaways from this session are outlined below: 🔸 The root cause analysis for graduate unemployment demonstrated graduates expressing feelings of low confidence, lack of motivation and lack of belief in their ability to effectively transition to tertiary education and career pathways. 🔸The more opportunity we provide students to feel successful in experiences and situations similar to tertiary and work life, the more self efficacy they are likely to develop. (referring to Albert Bandura’s Self Efficacy theory: https://lnkd.in/dwrezX3) 🔸 Get creative at using a scaffolded approach to introducing students to experiences within their zone of proximal development best suited for your context, where they receive opportunities to continuously interpret success or failure at a task including job shadowing, interviews and internships. 🔸 Create a space for students to ‘fail safely’ while they are with you. Language matters in ensuring graduates feel they have earned their position and succeeded on their own power. 🔸 Fostering self-efficacy cannot wait until students are graduating! Scaffold experiences and foster developmentally appropriate practice as early as possible. Narrating her journey of exploring the power of self efficacy, Lauren Daniels says, “As much as we require the technical skills to do our job, how we feel about our role and presence in an organisation is just as, if not more important. My worthiness of being in this space is not tied to a skill I may not have. I want to grow and seek mentorship but not from the space of lacking”. #WorldYouthSkillsDay #selfefficacy

She leads projects located in Ethiopia and Kenya which focus on public health, women's empowerment, agriculture, and nutrition. Damaris Wambua is an Early Childhood Development (ECD) Specialist at ChildFund International, Kenya with 20+ years of programming experience in ECD, education, and community development. Dr. Esther Gacicio is the Co-Founder and CEO of eLearning Solutions Limited. She is an eminent figure in the field of education technology, spearheading the design, delivery, and deployment of innovative learning and training solutions. George Kogolla is the Country Representative, Kenya & East Africa, IREX, a global development and education organisation experienced in leadership, strategy, partnerships, business and organisational development and project management. Joyce Wesonga is a Board member of the ECD Network Kenya. She has 15+ years of experience working in ECD, literacy, basic education, health, nutrition and women empowerment in disadvantaged/marginalised communities. James F.O. K'Adede Hon'gs is the Grants Acquisition and Management Manager, ChildFund Kenya. He is a fundraising, partnerships, and resource development professional with 20+ years experience. Kiko Muuo is the Founder and CEO of Angaza Elimu. He is an electrical engineer and a social entrepreneur who wants to address gaps in the education ecosystem using innovative education solutions. Nancy Mwali is the Finance and Administration Manager of the The Kilimanjaro Blind Trust, Africa, an organisation that supports the education and empowerment of blind and visually impaired children. She has 20+ years experience in financial planning for non-profit organisations. Oscar Kadenge is the Director of Programmes, Parenting for Lifelong Health and the Board Chair, ECD Network Kenya. He specialises in transformational and adaptive leadership and helps nonprofit organisations with budgeting, coaching, and programme evaluation. Sane Mdlalose, GM, Adaptostrat Solutions, was previously the Chief Growth Officer at SmartStart South Africa. She has 23+ years of experience in building winning growth plans across business pillars, bridging strategy to execution, and generating revenue growth. Reza Fazel is the Associate Partner of Open Capital, a financial advisory firm in Africa. We recently hosted a CoP session on Foundational Learning, addressing RTI’s Evidence from Numeracy at Scale and Science of Teaching – Manipulative in Mathematics Teaching. We were joined by 15 practitioners from 12 organisations working on diverse aspects of #FoundationalLearning. We are grateful to Dr Wendi Ralaingita , Senior Education Advisor at RTI International, for introducing us to the learnings from Numeracy at Scale study, highlighting key takeaways and essential characteristics of successful numeracy programs. RTI will soon release a guide that compiles evidence and shares guidance on appropriate selection and use of materials, particularly manipulatives, to support math learning. In this session, Dr. Wendi walked us through misconceptions around manipulatives, while informing programs and practitioners on best use of these materials. Key takeaways 🎓Four classroom ingredients stood out that lead to learning in numeracy programs that are effective at scale: Use of multiple representations; Focus on understanding; Active student engagement; and Assessment-informed instruction 🎓Highlighting the concept when using manipulatives through multiple representations is key to ensure that children recognise and understand the concept clearly. 🎓It is best to gradually bridge learning by starting with concrete or pictorial representations first before moving to abstract as learners are encouraged to master skills. 🎓When choosing manipulatives, it is important to be mindful whether those are appropriate both conceptually – most effective, and contextually – accessible in local environment. 🎓Conscious that teachers prior experience may limit the use of manipulatives, building teachers capacity on strengthening confidence and using multiple representations is pivotal.
