Nouri will be stationed at the auction house’s headquarters in London and will commence her role in October. “I am thrilled to be joining Bonhams, which boasts a long heritage, rich history, and strong values as an auction house, along with a reputation for innovation,” Nouri stated in a press release. “Its emphasis on digital transformation, global reach, and passion, fostered by its extraordinary talents, makes it an exceptionally exciting and dynamic company." Before joining Bonhams, Nouri served as the CEO of the watch and jewellery company Piaget for seven years and was a private equity partner at the Mirabaud Group, a Swiss private bank. She also spent ten years at Cartier, holding various positions, including management of its jewellery, watches, and retail merchandising. Nouri holds a master’s degree in economics from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. “Having served as a CEO of a leading luxury company, and in her most recent role as a co-manager of a private equity fund, Chabi has demonstrated abilities as a strong brand-builder and innovator in the digital space,” Bonhams Executive Chairman Hans-Kristian Hoejsgaard stated in a press release. “Her background in luxury also brings valuable experience and insight to one of the most important categories at Bonhams.” Founded in 1793, Bonhams is owned by the UK-based private equity company Epiris. The auction house operates 14 salerooms worldwide and acquired four auction houses in 2022: Bukowskis in Stockholm, Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen, Skinner in Boston, and Cornette de Saint Cyr in Paris. Bacon and Monet Landscapes to Headline Christie’s Evening Sale in London. Leading Christie’s major 20th and 21st century art auctions in London this year are two landscapes: an intense Francis Bacon and a nostalgic Monet, both absent from auction for some time. The Bacon piece, Landscape near Malabata, Tangier (1963), carries an estimate of £15 million-£20 million. Painted in tribute to Peter Lacy, with whom the artist shared a tumultuous relationship for years, it was created in London just a year after Lacy's tragic death in Tangiers at 46. Remaining in the same collection for over two decades, the painting last sold at Sotheby’s New York for $517,000 in 1985, setting a record for Bacon. Originally sold by Marlborough Gallery in 1963, it has been exhibited worldwide, including at the Grand Palais in Paris in 1971–72 and the Royal Academy of Arts’s “Francis Bacon: Man and Beast” in 2022. Monet’s Matinée sur la Seine, temps net (1897) is part of the artist’s “Mornings on the Seine” series, with each piece focusing on the same section of the river at different times of day. Estimated at £12 million-£18 million, this work is returning to auction after 45 years. Created in Monet’s studio-boat in the river winding through Giverny, where he produced many renowned works including the “Nymphéas” (Water Lilies) series. Last exhibited in 1990 as part of “Monet in the ‘90s: The Series Paintings,” this piece will be displayed alongside the Bacon painting at Christie’s New York until February 19, before both are exhibited at Christie’s London from March 1 through 7. Ai Weiwei's Thought. Renowned artist Ai Weiwei recently remarked that censorship in the West can be "sometimes even worse" than what he endured during Mao Zedong's era in China. Reflecting on the prevalent trend of individuals facing repercussions for expressing basic opinions, Ai cited the dismissal of two New York University professors due to comments related to Gaza, likening it to a cultural revolution attempting to suppress diverse attitudes. In November, Ai's London solo show at Lisson Gallery was reportedly called off after he tweeted about Palestine. He noted the cancellation in a now-deleted tweet, touching upon the complex dynamics involving the Jewish community's influence in the United States and the annual aid package to Israel. While the gallery stated the show's postponement was a mutual decision, Ai insisted it was effectively canceled. Discussing freedom of expression, Ai criticized Western artists, asserting that they prioritize financial gain and fame over defending this right. He expressed disappointment in the lack of active defense from his colleagues, attributing it to their pursuit of monetary success. Ai emphasized the prevalence of consequences in the art world for supporting Palestine, referencing photographer Nan Goldin's account of a "chilling period" marked by firings, exhibition cancellations, and withdrawn art purchases. In the interview with Sky News, Ai stated that his Twitter activity, which prompted the gallery's decision, was merely a response to someone's question. The inaugural auction of art and furniture from Hubert Guerrand-Hermès, the great-great-grandson of Hermés founder, marked a resounding success at Sotheby's Paris earlier this week. Termed a "white glove" sale, where every lot finds a buyer, the event surpassed expectations by tripling its pre-sale estimate. The auction, part of a series of five, realized over €22.9 million (approximately $25 million), exceeding the estimated range of €6.1 million – €8.9 million. Highlighted among the top offerings on December 13 was a Louis XVI chair, intricately carved and regilded, believed to have adorned Marie-Antoinette's personal chambers at Château de Versailles. Notably, this piece set a record for the sale of an 18th-century furniture item, fetching €2,589,000. Additionally, Pierre Soulages' Peinture (1970), a striking work of art, commanded just over €3 million. The auction featured bronze monkey sculptures by François-Xavier Lalanne, originally flanking an 18th-century toilet in Guerrand-Hermès's Parisian residence, Hôtel de Lannion. Following the success of the white glove affair, two subsequent in-person sales occurred on December 14 and 15, titled Collection Hubert Guerrand-Hermès, L’hôtel de Lannion, and Collection Hubert Guerrand-Hermès, Autour de la duchesse de Berry, respectively. The auction series will conclude with two online sales ending on December 19. The VIP preview of The Armory Show kicked off with brisk sales and intense discussions surrounding the recent consolidation in the art fair industry. Frieze's acquisition of both The Armory Show and EXPO Chicago earlier in the year took center stage, as the art world pondered its repercussions. Despite the buzz, The Armory Show's executive director, Nicole Berry, remained focused on the present, emphasizing the fair's strength and the positive response it had received. Berry revealed that plans for this year's edition were well underway when the Frieze acquisition was announced, with discussions about the future expected to follow after the fair's conclusion. Frieze New York and the 2024 edition of The Armory Show were scheduled to proceed as planned. However, this year's fair marked a shift from 2022, with a decrease in exhibitors from 240 to 225, and a sense of lighter attendance on the opening day. Some dealers noted slower sales, possibly reflecting a broader correction in the art market. Enthusiasm for art fairs reached its peak in 2022, driven by relief from pandemic restrictions, which may have led organizers to intentionally shrink the fair size this year. Notwithstanding these changes, standout pieces could still be found, particularly in the special Armory section "Platform," curated by Eva Respini. Notable works included Woody De Othello's patinated bronze sculpture, Yinka Shonibare's, Agnes Denes', and Teresita Fernandez's art, all under the theme of "Rewriting Histories," showcasing a mix of new creations and familiar favorites. #artist #artandauction #topauctionhouse #artworksforsale #upcomingauctions #toplots #artistindex #artist #artbider #Armoryshow
