The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on an 8-month contract at the English Language and Literature Department.

Project Title: The ethnolinguistic repertoires and linguistic practices of Malay and Indian bilinguals in Singapore [NIE-SUG 3-23 JSH]

Project Introduction: This mixed-methods research project explores how the ethnolinguistic repertoires of Malay and Indian Singaporeans are associated with their ethnic identities in multicultural Singapore. It also seeks to empirically account for variation in their linguistic practices based on differences in factors such as their ethnically-oriented activities and stances, social networks, ideologies or cultural orientations, and language dominance. The primary method of investigation will be the collection and analysis of speech data. The initial phase of the project, which the research assistant will support, focuses on English-Malay bilinguals.

Requirements

  • A basic degree from a reputable university in linguistics, sociology, anthropology or a related field
  • Proficiency in English and Malay language
  • Training in acoustic phonetics and phonetic transcription an advantage
  • Training in experimental (socio)linguistics an advantage
  • Familiarity with research on bilingualism, multilingualism and language contact an advantage
  • Experience in using Praat software an advantage
  • Experience in statistical data analysis an advantage
  • Experience in using R statistical software an advantage
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Able to work cooperatively in teams
  • Proactive, willing to learn, reliable and able to manage concurrent tasks in a timely manner

Responsibilities

  • Co-ordinate and assist in data collection
  • Co-ordinate data storage, processing, and management
  • Code data, especially orthographic transcription, and acoustic phonetic segmentation and annotation
  • Conduct literature review and other research-related tasks
  • Assist in writing of reports
  • Have regular meetings with the Principal Investigator
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigator
