Today is World Physiotherapy Day! We are celebrating our incredible network of physiotherapists whose mahi makes a meaningful difference in the lives of clients across Aotearoa. Over 30 years ago, our founder Gillian Webb hung out her Active Physio sign on Manukau Road in central Auckland in a tiny one room physiotherapy practice. Now, we have a whopping 727 physiotherapists in our provider network that help us deliver physiotherapy services to clients across both North and South Islands.  Thank you to all our Active+ physiotherapists for your unwavering commitment to improving the physical well-being of our communities across New Zealand. We're thrilled to celebrate two outstanding nurses at Southern Cross Rotorua! Patty Bester and Stephanie Archer, both Registered Nurses, have recently marked 15 years with us. Patty, orginally from South Africa, began as a dedicated night nurse and now works on our day and afternoon shifts. Steph started her nursing journey as a New Graduate, working between Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Southern Cross Rotorua, and now expertly balances her night shifts with a busy family life. We are incredibly fortunate to have Stephanie and Patty as part of our team. Thank you, for your unwavering dedication and compassionate care. With a strong background as a “nurse by trade”, and extensive experience in surgery, Rachael also brings 15 years of leadership experience from Bowen Hospital, Wakefield Hospital and Hutt Valley Health District Board. Rachael’s impressive journey spans both clinical and corporate settings, earning her significant credibility with consulting surgeons. Her expertise in refurbishments and rebuilds will be invaluable as we move into the final stages of the Southern Cross Wellington Hospital Campus redevelopment, where our state-of-the-art orthopaedics care facility is taking shape. The most incredible privilege to be hosted by colleagues at the world’s leading healthcare organisation, the Mayo Clinic today, or as they call it “in the middle of the corn field” Spending time with remarkable professionals was enlightening, validating and inspiring. What stood out for me was three consistent themes: 1. The intrinsic courage to try new ways, new things and not just stick in the comfort lane, or tinker around the edges, instead, they go all in, no pilotitis! 2. There is no “innovation department”. Instead, there is a deep seeded culture where the entire organisation is the innovation department. 3. And the secret to the “world’s best care”….. it’s delivered by a “team of teams”, that do not organise around sub-speciality (orthopaedic, plastics, or rheumatology) to suit some sort of internal need for hierarchy. Rather, by patient need (disease type) which forces care teams to truly put patients at the heart of their care plan and is core to their collaborative care ethos. Finally, as always, all avenues lead to culture and leadership of an organisation, beautifully summarised by the Mayo Clinic philosophy - 'the wisdom of peers is greater than any individual”. I’m so grateful to our incredible colleagues, you’ve created memories / learnings that will last for a very very long time…🙏
