79 years ago, in the early hours of 6 August 1945, a B-29 aircraft released a powerful new weapon over Hiroshima. The atomic bomb destroyed the city, which resulted in the immediate deaths of around 70,000 people and left many more with serious injuries. Just three days later, on 9 August, a second atomic bomb caused widespread destruction in Nagasaki, leading to the deaths of 39,000 people. By 1950, an estimated 340,000 people had died due to the impact of the bombs, including illnesses caused by exposure to radiation. Hospitals are still treating thousands of survivors and identifying new links between radiation exposure and fatal illnesses. The International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC and the Japanese Red Cross Society witnessed the unimaginable suffering and devastation and worked tirelessly as medical and humanitarian in nearly impossible conditions to aid the dying and injured. There are over 13,000 nuclear bombs in the world and many of them much more powerful than the ones used in the 1940s. They’re on high alert, ready to be launched in an instant and vulnerable to human error and cyber-attacks. Since the first bomb was dropped, our Movement has called for nuclear weapons to never be used again and for their complete prohibition and elimination. All States must join the nuclear ban treaty now and bring the nuclear weapons era to an end. At New Zealand Red Cross, we're lucky to work with some great New Zealand corporate supporters and partners before, during and after disasters. We recently gave some of them a tour of our Emergency Response Warehouse in Auckland and ran a collective action workshop, where we collaboratively discussed how we could strengthen our response efforts in times of disaster. A massive thank you to ASB Bank, Bunnings, The Coca-Cola Company and Woolworths New Zealand for your active participation and commitment to disaster response in Aotearoa and special thanks to PwC New Zealand for your exceptional facilitation of the workshop. We are excited to continue building these relationships and working together to improve our disaster response capabilities and strengthen community resilience. Together, we can make a difference. #DisasterResponse #CommunityResilience #CorporatePartners #NewZealandRedCross #Collaboration #StrongerTogether #CollectiveAction

Being neutral, impartial, and independent allows the International Committee of the Red Cross to work in conflict areas.  Our mission comes from the Geneva Conventions, universal laws that preserve a degree of humanity even in the worst of times. They call for civilians to be spared and the wounded cared for. By not picking a side, we build trust with all those fighting.  Our work is to limit peoples’ suffering, no matter who they are or what side of the fighting they are on. We take action, not sides.   Learn more about our Fundamental Principles. https://lnkd.in/gd9zy2TE #RedCross #NZRedCross #GenevaConventions #IHL #RulesOfWar #ArmedConflict #Neutrality #Impartial #Independent #FundamentalPrinciples

International humanitarian law limits suffering caused by war. The 1949 Geneva Conventions draw clear lines between those who are fighting in wars and those who are not. They continue to address the challenges people face as a result of modern warfare.   Below are the five things, international humanitarian law means.  1. No targeting civilians. 2. No torture or inhuman treatment. 3. No attacking hospitals and aid workers. 4. Giving safe passage for civilians to flee. 5. Giving access to humanitarian organizations.  The Geneva Conventions must be applied without discrimination. Whatever a person's race, sex, nationality, political opinion, or religion. Respecting international humanitarian law helps people to go back to living peacefully together again. The Geneva Conventions are one of humanity's most important accomplishments of the last century. In 1949, in the aftermath of World War II, the Conventions were universally agreed upon by countries to reflect universal morals and ethical behaviour. Four conventions and their additional protocols aim to protect those wounded or no longer fighting, prisoners of war and civilians.  - The First Geneva Convention protects wounded and sick soldiers on land during war  - The Second Geneva Convention protects wounded, sick and shipwrecked military personnel at sea during the war - The Third Geneva Convention applies to prisoners of war - The Fourth Geneva Convention protects civilians, including those in occupied territory.  In the two decades that followed the adoption of the Geneva Conventions, the world witnessed an increase in the number of non-international armed conflicts and wars of national liberation.   In response, two Protocols Additional to the four 1949 Geneva Conventions were adopted in 1977. They strengthen the protection of victims of international (Protocol I) and non-international (Protocol II) armed conflicts and limit how wars are fought. Protocol II was the first-ever international treaty devoted exclusively to situations of non-international armed conflicts. In 2005, a third Additional Protocol was adopted creating an additional emblem, the Red Crystal, which has the same international status as the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems.
