  • Sited on a north-facing ridge amid dense bushland, the Erskine River House by Kerstin Thompson Architects was conceived as a place of seclusion and security. Constructed using pre-cast concrete panels, its exterior is both deliberately monolithic and compact. Its northern elevation is broken up by large areas of glazing which can completely retract, opening the interior to the landscape and valley below. The interior of the long, narrow structure is divided into five separate nooks, while the back wall of each nook sweeps around in a generous curve, encasing the occupant and directing the view outwards past the northern elevation. • A modern, minimalist concrete building surrounded by a hazy, natural landscape with a prominent eucalyptus tree in the foreground. The setting suggests a cool, misty environment, emphasizing the contrast between the sharp architectural lines and the soft, organic forms of the surrounding foliage.
    • A minimalist hallway featuring tall wooden cabinetry on both sides. The floor is polished concrete and the wall at the end of the hallway has a rough concrete texture. On the left, a wooden bench sits flush against the wall, with a small abstract wooden sculpture and a rounded stone-like object on top. The lighting is soft and emanates from above, casting gentle shadows. The atmosphere is serene and modern.
    • Interior scene with a textured brown sofa in the foreground. On a shelf behind it are three decorative bottles beside a white vase holding delicate branches with white blooms. The background features a grey concrete wall with a streak of light.
    • A modern, minimalist living space characterized by concrete walls, a prominent black metal stove with a visible fire, and natural light casting shadows on a smooth floor, complemented by wooden chairs and a plush sofa in the background.
    • A wooden cabinet with brushed metal handles is partially open, revealing stacks of minimalist black dinnerware on the shelves of an adjacent sleek, black storage unit in a contemporary kitchen setting.

As a human-centred business with a passion for innovation, we were proud to join up with DYP as part of Techweek NZ 2024 for an evening of sharing and collaboration at our Dunedin Design Centre. An exclusive tour of our facilities offered select guests a rare glimpse into the workings of a leading global appliance manufacturer. Presented by our people, we took a new generation of aspiring engineers and product designers through Fisher & Paykel’s product development capacity and goals, as well as engaging with their inspiring ambitions. A huge thank you to TechStep for their generous support of this event and the opportunity to share our vision with the future of our industry. #fisherpaykel

This family home in the Brooklyn neighbourhood of Clinton Hill tests the scope of adaptive re-use by utilising mass-timber construction in the renovation of a 19th-century carriage house. In creating the first single-family residence in New York to fully explore the potential of this sustainable, low-impact method, Schiller Projects has set an important precedent for housing in urban environments. Mass timber is a construction system that uses standard concrete and steel with compressed, engineered wood in large panels, columns, or beams. It offers the same structural load-bearing capacity as other materials and construction techniques, but it is far lighter and less carbon-intensive. Renowned architect Omar Gandhi stands at the pinnacle of architectural success in Canada, respected all over the world for his ability to connect with clients on a personal level, designing homes with careful consideration for the lives that will be lived within the finished space. As part of our collaborative partnership with Omar for the design and development of our upcoming Toronto Experience Centre, he visited New Zealand to gain deeper insights into our brand ethos and culture. More than just a showcase of our brand, the visit was an opportunity to offer Omar the context of our unique place in the world, and share how Aotearoa New Zealand shapes our thinking. Canadian architect Omar Ghandi designed his own getaway, creating a geometric Corten-steel structure in the wilds of Nova Scotia. From a distance, the structure appears as a small disruption amid the ever-changing colours of the surrounding forest. However, up close its presence becomes monumental. The building form, which rises above the modest entry and appears to protrude from the rocky outcrop, is simple and geometrical, with a façade that is made up of a patchwork of glass and weathered steel. The Gatehouse is a dynamic Arrowtown residence by architecture firm Patterson Associates and interior designer Sonja Hawkins that pays homage to the scenery, while echoing its rural context. The brief was for a flexible home that could be both intimate and spacious, catering to its owners alone or a large party of guests. The architect conceived it as two related barn-like structures defined by their simple, gabled roofline, which is a call-back to the vernacular architecture of this rural area. Inside, the robust character of the location guided the material palette, with timber-panelled walls and terracotta floors to generate warmth and tactility. Earlier this month, we had the immense pleasure of participating in the inaugural Auckland Design Week. As part of the festival's Design Day series, we welcomed guests from the industry into our Auckland Experience Centre over two days. Throughout this time, we staged a tightly choreographed performance of ritual and routine, set to the backdrop of music played by solo violinist Peau Halapua. Somewhere between fashion show, theatre production and classical concert, four scenarios inspired by our everyday reality played out amid our immersive luxury settings. Routines were transformed into rituals through a hyper-real, hyper-stylised rendition of everyday life. Auckland Design Week is a 10-day festival of talks, tours, and networking events culminating in Design Day, where showrooms within design districts along a pre-prescribed route partner with artists to create experiences within their spaces. Fisher & Paykel’s Auckland Experience Centre fortuitously fell along this route, and as such, we welcomed an impressive number of people through our doors. With the event fostering a new approach to immersive events within our local design community, we look forward to the years to come.

Beyond its unassuming timber-batten façade, Cooparoo House, designed by Brisbane architecture firm Nielsen Jenkins home, is defined by a surprising sense of openness. Downstairs, the space reads as one, and the house can be completely open from front to back. Polished concrete floors stretch the length of the room, drawing the eye through the building. Additionally, the architects created two tile-lined voids that connect the floors and bring in more natural light and ventilation. The kitchen-dining area is located at the back of the house, opening directly to the garden. With entertaining front of mind, a collection of Fisher & Paykel appliances was selected by the clients to complement the minimal kitchen design and colour palette used throughout the house.
