📦 Innovating Automated Packaging Processes with 3D Printing 📦 I’m excited to share one of my latest projects where I 3D printed a Packaging Inverter that flips packaging 180 degrees, seamlessly changing its orientation in a conveyor system. This solution, generated in nTop (special thanks to Olaf Diegel), is ideal for tasks like adding a best-before date to the bottom of packaging. I’ve seen many versions of this application, often created by milling large blocks of POM and stacking them, but it’s truly a perfect fit for 3D printing. The Packaging Inverter is engineered to enhance workflow efficiency by precisely reorienting each package without manual intervention. By leveraging advanced 3D model generation and printing technology, I was able to rapidly prototype and refine this solution to meet specific packaging format needs. Printed on the UltiMaker Factor 4 with an engineering print profile, the result was flawless, delivering a successful practical test. And it works great! This high pressure pump valve is installed in a train to conduct liquids or chemicals. But because it had become an obsolete component and could no longer be produced, the entire pump assembly needed to be replaced – costing approximately €5,000. Using PPS CF, a material with strong mechanical and thermal properties, this pump can now be 3D printed, while capable of withstanding hot acid and meeting the UL94 V0 standard for non-flammability. The ability to rapidly prototype and produce on-demand parts means that packaging systems can be quickly adapted and improved, leading to more effective handling solutions and cost savings.
