In the wake of the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, the 50 largest US public companies pledged nearly US$50 billion to address racial inequality, more than 90% of which was allocated as loans or investments into Black institutions and communities.    However, in the first year since corporate pledges to address racial inequality were made, 37 companies confirmed disbursing only US$1.7B of the US$50B pledged.    We do not think this is an anomaly.    Despite the political will, availability of public/philanthropic funding, and best intentions of private programs to promote investment, there is no inevitability to the flow of capital to opportunities in underserved markets. In case you missed it: CrossBoundary’s Fund for Nature participated in Bio-Logical’s recent $1.3 million fundraising round, which will enable the climate tech company to scale up its Mt Kenya biochar facility to meet the increasing demand for carbon removal and support climate resilience for Kenyan smallholder farmers. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dgrdhjJu In February, Microsoft committed to purchase 10,000 tons of carbon removal from Bio-Logical – its first biochar deal in Africa. Since March of this year, Bio-Logical has supported over 1,000 farmers to build their climate resilience and boost yields with its Asili biochar-based fertilizer. We are excited about biochar-based fertilizer because it:   🌱 enhances soil structure by increasing porosity and water retention, helping plants better withstand drought conditions   🌱 improves absorption and retention of nutrients in soil, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers   🌱 helps neutralize acidic soils, making them more suitable for plant growth   🌱 delivers on climate mitigation goals through high-quality carbon removal with long-term storage   The Fund for Nature’s investment in Bio-Logical represents a win-win for climate action and sustainable agriculture.
