In Hong Kong, we throw away over 5 million plastic beverage bottles every single day. Most of them end up in landfill. The first food-grade plastic recycling facility has opened in HK, New Life Plastics Ltd, processing plastic bottles sourced from HK into flakes which can be used to make new beverage bottles. It was a pleasure to work with two teams from Morgan Stanley this past month through our educational Corporate Beach Cleanup programme. We have a long relationship with Morgan Stanley, spanning the last 10 years, and have educated and engaged hundreds of employees and cleaned many beaches. This year we cleaned beaches in Sok Kwu Wan, Lamma Island (in the rain) and Tuen Mun (with lots of mosquitos). Kudos to the volunteers for their hard work and perseverance! 👏 This year's results from the two cleanups are impressive - almost half a tonne of waste removed from the marine environment! 💪 * 424kg of rubbish * 86 participants Knowing that beach cleanups alone are not going to solve the plastic pollution problem, Morgan Stanley continues to implement waste reduction initiatives in the office and do a fantastic job of engaging with their staff on the #reduce message. Did You Know? 💡 30% of municipal solid waste sent to landfill in HK is food. To divert food waste from the landfill to a gov't treatment facility where it can be turned into energy and compost, the EPD has set up 76 Food Waste Recycling Spots in 15 districts, for restaurant and public use. A bin is placed in each location for a set period of time every evening. You can also find Food Waste Points at 71 refuse collection points (RCPS) across the city. At the Mox Lamma 500 Dragon Boat races two weeks ago we collected 45kg of recyclables, making sure they didn't end up in the landfill: * 472 plastic beverage bottles * 2,270 cans Thanks to the support of Murray Johnson, the organisers and their team (Brad Tarr, Gina Miller, Claudia Tarr), Gweilo Beer for supplying reusable cups, Suzanne Younan and her long time efforts with Green Dragons HK, our fantastic volunteers and all the teams and individuals who brought their own reusable water bottles, cutlery, food containers and made sure to get their recyclables to the correct bin. Today is Stanley Warm Up race day. The organisers have stepped up this year and told us that they are managing the recyclables. Last year, together with Suzanne Younan, we collected 100kg of recyclables, a whopping 3,000 plastic beverage bottles and 1,500 cans.
