#Meet Herbert Michael Keffel, our Head of Competence Center Operations, ORAT & IT. Herbert is one of our most seasoned aviation professionals and our dedicated expert for #ORAT projects. With a strong and holistic operational background, he knows how to guide and support large teams through complex challenges.   𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗧 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘁? Yes true – it was the ORAT for the new Munich Airport in 1992. The relocation from Riem to the current location near Freising was carried out in a truly remarkable overnight operation. I was a resource allocator with ground handling at the time and part of the team that managed the relocation. My job was to allocate trucks and special vehicles to the loading zones to load the material, vehicles and mainly GSE at the old airport and release them to the new airport at the right time to the right place.   𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁? It was the first ORAT project in history ever. The beauty was that it was masterminded by the ops planning department of Munich Airport, they in turn acquired people from different areas to manage and execute the project. Everything went seamlessly and without the slightest glitch! From this project, whose methodology was unprecedented at that time, we derived the program that we call ORAT (operational readiness and airport transfer) today.   𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗧 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻? I was involved in 11 and led 6 of them. It is an elevating experience to help bring such complex infrastructure to life and thus connect the world.   𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁? The first ORAT project that I participated from start to end was the one in Kuala Lumpur. I was seconded to there from 1996 and it was my first time in southeast Asia. I was young, with a great team that managed this huge project. Another highlight was the sheer size and complexity of Istanbul. The move from TK and their affiliated companies from Atatürk Airport to the new site was the largest move in mankind so far – all goods transported would cover 33 football pitches.   𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗧 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀? 30 years ago, it was a rather manual exercise, at the very beginning with pen, paper, and whiteboards. This was enough to manage the logistical challenges. With the ongoing digitalization and growing complexity in logistics, IT is increasingly important to manage the project itself but also stakeholders, logistics, trainings, and trials. We now see and test the implementation of cloud based ORAT collaboration and management platforms. The next step will be the introduction if KI to further improve and facilitate logistics, planning and communication and thus streamline ORAT projects. #newairport #ShapingTheFutureOfAirports #airportopening

#Meet Christopher Liese, our Business Development Manager North America! Hailing from Berlin, Germany, Chris started his career at Munich Airport International (MAI) in 2018, working on various global projects. In 2019, he took on the role as Business Development Manager North America and moved to Washington D.C., where he coordinates all business development activities and ensures the seamless service delivery across the North American continent. Chris maintains close contact with clients, partners, as well as our consultants, serving as the vital link between our North American operations and the German headquarters. 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯?   One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is the diversity I encounter in both the U.S. and Canada, professionally and personally. Each day, I engage with a wide variety of clients and work on different project pursuits, which keeps my role dynamic and stimulating. Additionally, I greatly appreciate the "can-do" attitude prevalent among people here and their proactive approach to business.   𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀?   The most significant challenge for me was relocating to a new city and country just before the outbreak of a global pandemic. This experience was both daunting and transformative. Over time, I have adapted and grown, and Washington D.C. has now become my second home.   𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁?   As travel rebounds across the continent and in many cases exceeds pre-COVID numbers, it pushes airport infrastructure to its limits. This resurgence highlights the urgent need for modernization and expansion to meet current demands and prepare for future growth. MAI is well positioned to support these needs at various stages – from initial conceptual planning to the operation and management of terminals on a day-to-day basis.   𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂?   If I were to highlight one standout project, it would be working with Toronto Pearson International Airport, managed by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA). The GTAA is spearheaded by a team of highly capable and dedicated individuals who are executing a very ambitious transformational capital program. Pearson Airport shares many similarities with Munich Airport, including comparable passenger volumes and similar challenges related to airport development. This makes it an especially intriguing and rewarding project to be involved with.

VIP-Terminals are a promising new market for airports. Currently, “Terminal BTG Pactual“, a new state-of-the-art VIP-Terminal, is being constructed at Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), set to be one of the largest ones in the world upon opening.   Recently, we had the honor of welcoming Fabio Camargo, Gabriel Trovão and Gabriela Goldenstein of Aero Empreendimentos S.A., the concessionaire of the said Terminal, to our beautiful homebase Flughafen München.   As we have been supporting the development of Terminal BTG Pactual since early stages, we took the opportunity to introduce our guests to Munich Airport’s VipWing, which was one of the first of its kind in the world. It was the perfect setting for sharing experiences and discussing international best practices together with Martin Rathgens, Product-, Process- and Marketing Manager of the VipWing.   Afterwards, we had a workshop on concepts of operations and commercial strategies together with our managing director Lorenzo Di Loreto and our experts Carolina Calvo Batalla, MBA, German Gonzalez, Alejandro Viyella and Kevin Bråten.   It was a great pleasure for us to welcome our Brazilian partners to Munich and we enjoyed the opportunity of exchanging ideas and sharing knowledge. We are looking forward to further support Aero Empreendimentos S.A. in the development of GRU’s truly unique new terminal. --------------------------- P.S. If you are interested in the concept of VIP-Terminals, don’t miss tomorrow’s Airports Council International - Latin America and Caribbean - ACI LAC webinar held by our expert German Gonzalez!
