Future Russia - Switzerland

On 9.07.24 our association representatives took part in a parallel event on ‘Rights to freedom of assembly and association’ (Rights to freedom of assembly and association) at the The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). In our contribution we spoke about the repression of public assemblies in Russia and called for additional attention from the international community to the repression of Russian civil society. During the discussion, a US representative asked a question about repression and attacks on Russian political opposition representatives abroad. In our detailed response, we emphasised the importance of international cooperation to protect human rights and support those facing persecution for their convictions. We are very pleased that the presentation was successful and attracted the interest and support of the international community. We are very grateful to the peer associations Rights and Freedoms of Turkmenistan Citizens and Institute for Reporters Freedom and Safety for inviting us to the session and look forward to fruitful co-operation in the future. ⚠ « Swiss company suspected of helping Putin! The Kremlin arrests critics thanks to facial recognition. A software company called Toloka was recently registered in Lucerne... » Tages-Anzeiger Schweiz 🏅 An international consortium of journalists investigated and discovered that there appears to be a legal loophole in Swiss Laws that allows a facial recognition software company called Toloka to continue to operate in Switzerland and supply software to Russia. ❗ Toloka was registered in Lucerne in February 2023. It operates a platform to which so-called clickworkers from all over the world can upload their data, such as photos of their faces. In return, they receive a small amount of money, and Toloka can use these images to train artificial intelligence programmes to recognize faces, etc. 🆘 Russian companies have also benefited from this training, as an international consortium of journalists has discovered. Their software has been used, in turn, by the Kremlin's security apparatus to identify critics of the Putin's regime. 🔗 Toloka belongs to the Yandex search engine group.  However, judging by the way the companies are organised, Toloka is able to continue doing business with Russia through a Swiss branch. This is because those Russian companies who help the security apparatus in Moscow to recognize the faces of opposition figures are sanctioned in the EU. But not in Switzerland. Дорогие сторонники демократии, Мы хотим поделиться с вами важной новостью от PACE- Парламентская Ассамблея Совета Европы (ПАСЕ).  Единогласно приняв резолюцию на основе доклада Э. Зингериса/ E. Zingeris (Lithuania, EPP/CD) ПАСЕ отказалась признавать легитимность Владимира Путина на посту президента России и призвала всё международное сообщество прекратить контакты с ним, за исключением гуманитарных целей и для достижения мира. В резолюции говорится, что Путин занял пост президента в 2024 году в результате выборов, которые не были ни свободными ни честными. Ассамблея заявила, что под властью Владимира Путина Россия фактически превратилась в диктатуру, которая ведет "войну против демократии". Ассамблея призвала ЕС и другие государства применить санкции к тем, кто непосредственно ответственен за преследование, жестокое обращение и смерть Алексея Навального, и к тем, кто фигурирует в "списке Навального". ПАСЕ также призвала все государства привлечь Россию к ответственности за систематическое применение пыток в соответствии с Конвенцией ООН против пыток. ПАСЕ заявила о создании контактной платформы для диалога с демократическими силами России и призвала к созданию Генерального Докладчика по этой теме. What a Great Experience! The members of the Future Russia - Switzerland association joined the MPs Céline Widmer and Fabian Molina at Parliament on 17.04.2024. It was a humbling experience - listening to the presentations, discussions and votes in the National Council. The lesson was invaluable - it helped us understand the multiple talents the MPs need to promote motions and change legislation. The Green Party and the Socialist Party MPs proposed motions concerning Switzerland's participation in the REPO international Task Force on the implementation of economic sanctions against Putin's regime, as well as the question of granting asylum to Russian conscientious objectors. We found it regrettable that the other parties were reluctant to accept change. In a world that is evolving rapidly, some deputies persist in the illusion that they can continue with business as usual. However, the challenges we face demand innovation and adaptability. We also wish to express our gratitude to other MPs members of Grüne Schweiz and the Socialist Party for engaging in insightful discussions on many important topics. 🇨🇭 Exciting developments in Swiss Parliament! On April 17, 2024, the National Council will vote on Switzerland's engagement in the REPO Task Force on implementing economic sanctions against Russia. This proposal, championed by a deputy and member of the GRÜNE Schweiz Les VERT-E-S suisses Franziska Ryser, aims to bolster global efforts in response to Russia's aggression. 💡 🤝 What is REPO? Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, a coalition including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US, and the European Commission formed the REPO Task Force. Their mission? To coordinate efforts in isolating the Russian Elites, Proxies, and Oligarchs (REPO) through targeted sanctions. 💰 💼 The impact? REPO's coordinated actions have frozen billions of dollars in assets and restricted access to international financial systems, crippling resources used to fuel Russia's aggression in Ukraine. 🗳️ Swiss Parliament's Vote: Mrs Ryser's proposal urged Switzerland to join the REPO Working Group, recognizing Switzerland's pivotal role as a hub for Russian assets and commodities trading.
