Bridging the gap between opportunity and access- Africa/Canada || Founder & Director || Social Entrepreneur || Community Builder
What an incredible summer it has been! I spent some time this summer in an outreach to various Refugee settlements in Uganda (I travelled across Kampala, Kiryandongo, Kyangwali & Hoima) under the DREEM project. DREEM is a partnership between the Mastercard Foundation and World University Service of Canada (WUSC - EUMC) where WUSC serves as a strategic learning partner and provides technical advice to the Foundation on refugee inclusion. In collaboration with organizations like UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, CIYOTA, FCA, Office of the Prime Minister (OPM)- Department of Refugees, I engaged in dialogue with other partners and stakeholders in understanding the challenges of refugees, sharing my journey, encouraging them onto the path of higher Ed and introducing The University of British Columbia to them. There are about 1.7m refugees in Uganda with Majority (80%) being women and children below 18. Mad. Carolyn - The head of refugee resettlement and complimentary pathways unit at UNHCR Uganda reminded us (and now I feel the need to remind everyone) that Refugees don't need our pity. They need us to give them opportunities. Only 1% of these refugees currently have access to higher Education. Now onto the more crucial work of working alongside the Director of Global Campus Initiatives, Shanda Williams, RCIC, to explore ways where UBC's recruitment and admissions process can be inclusive and supportive enough to welcome folks from Refugee and Displaced Backgrounds.
