" Officials investigating the derailment testified that these first responders weren’t able to access information about the chemicals that were in 11 overturned cars carrying hazardous materials. Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, the agency investigating the crash, urged senators to consider meaningful changes to help inform exposed communities and first responders." “People deserve to know what chemicals are moving through their communities and how to stay safe in an emergency, That includes responders who risk their lives for each of us every single day. Friends in the Industry - In the transportation industry, did you know that carriers hauling dangerous goods, are required to carry dangerous goods shipping documents while operating in Canada? Most likely. Did you know, that commercial carriers not only have a responsibility to ensure their drivers are trained in dangerous goods, that the shipping documents are eligible with the required details filled, but also are required to maintain these documents for a specific amount of time? There is quite a bit of requirements to complete, order for a commercial carrier to be compliant with the dangerous goods regulations. I think we can all agree that it’s extremely important to be compliant, and ensure you’re doing everything in your power to ensure you’re mitigating all possible risks within your business. There’s also a large cost on the carrier, to ensure that they’re compliant. Wait time being paid while your driver receives their shipping documents, to maintaining documentation at your office. Let me ask you another question about dangerous goods shipping documents in Canada. Did you know, that you can utilize digital shipping documents while operating in Canada? Yup, you can. Yesterday afternoon, Harp Powar and I met with our friend Amit Bhargava, M.Sc., P. Eng., CEO of EnviroApps Inc. to discuss dangerous goods and the option of going digital when working with them. Friends in the Industry - I want to give a huge shoutout to Paul A. CURTIS, BA, CIP, CRM, Hazmat Certified, and Wayne Dubeau with SteegeXP for spending time with Harp Powar and I yesterday on a call to discuss Bill of Ladings. Throughout my career, I've had different relationships with Bill of Ladings, or BOLs. As a professional driver, I knew that the BOL provided important details about what I would be hauling. As a safety manager, I learned that there were regulations surrounding BOLs. The details recorded on the BOL were more than just indicating basic shipping and product information; they played a major part in the logistics of hauling freight, especially in the event of a claim. On our call yesterday, I was thoroughly impressed with the expertise Paul, Wayne, and Harp showcased. They've helped a large number of clients navigate claims that were challenging due to the BOL issues. There were a couple of key takeaways from our conversation yesterday. 1—Ensure the details on your BOL are accurate, from the names and product details to declaring the value of the commodities. 2-It's important to know the areas you're traveling to and from. If this is your first trip, make sure you have a plan in case a collision occurs. Know whom to call, which companies you can trust, and how you can protect yourself, your vehicles, and, if possible, the commodities you're hauling. 3—It's critical that your company works with the experts to ensure your protection before you hit the road. Insurance coverage, plans in place in the event of a collision or claim, and claims management through adjusters all play a large part in your company's success in the event the worst-case scenario takes place when out on the highway.
