Little known fact: an old hobby of mine was shooting. Sporting, Trap, and Skeet on the clay side of things, and target shooting with an Air Rifle. Whilst I was pretty good (self-confessed expert marksman), I was never Yusuf Dikec type of good. Like most people who watched him shoot the other morning, I started thinking "where is all his gear?", "why isn't he closing his eye to aim?", "why is his hand in his pocket?", and "where's all the fancy tech that is going to make him get a medal?... oh wait, he got silver without all of it". 🥈 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝘁 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲. I can't think of a more appropriate idiom to use when talking about Data Governance. Especially when you start to think about the design and implementation of data governance policies and procedures. Key Aspects to keep simple: 1️⃣ 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 You don't need to boil the ocean here - clearly define who is responsible for your data assets, your service catalogues, and for all aspects of your data governance framework. Avoid complex hierarchies and avoid having multiple owners that can lead to confusion. Start simple and build on it as you need to. 2️⃣ 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 Data Governance is already confusing enough without overcooking complex and confusing data policies. Policies that are too detailed or that contain too much jargon, too many technical terms, or too many confusing principles will be difficult for people to follow and will be impossible to enforce. 3️⃣ 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 Establish simple and measurable data quality rules. Don't focus on every single piece of data and try to apply data quality rules to everything. Focus on your critical data elements that have the most impact on your business. Keep the rules very simple and refine as you go. 4️⃣ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 This is very important. I say this in every meeting and every engagement I take part in; Data Governance is inherently boring, so you need to use clear and concise language when explaining data governance and you need to try and make it fun, or at the very least, make it seem like it's not red tape. Avoid information overload - keep it simple and drip feed information as required. No one wants to sit in a 2-hour long meeting about 'What is Data Governance'. 5️⃣ 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 & 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 Look at tools and tech that are use-friendly and compliment your existing processes. Complex systems will make adoption harder and lead to resistance from users. Not only business users, but your data management team as well - there jobs is hard enough without trying to complicate it with terrible tooling. By keeping these 5 aspects of Data Governance as simple as you can, you can enhance the effectiveness of data governance and encourage broader adoption and compliance across your business.
