A big WIRES thank you to our Wildlife Food Partner, Woolworths Supermarkets, for their ongoing support! Not only do they donate surplus food that helps nourish rescued wildlife in care, they are also our Matched Giving Partner for our upcoming Giving Day! Over 170 Woolworths stores are involved in the Rescue Food program and donate thousands of kilos of food to wildlife carers each year, helping animals in care receive the nutrition they require. Each year, WIRES' volunteers provide 24/7 care to thousands of sick, injured, and orphaned native animals, but sourcing wildlife-specific food and milk formula remains one of our largest expenses. That is why, on Thursday, 26th September, WIRES and Woolworths are teaming up to raise critical funds to support our carers, who work tirelessly to give wildlife a second chance. Thanks to Woolworths and a generous anonymous donor, the first $70,000 donated on Giving Day will be DOUBLED! Sugar Glider Found in Boot 👞 A homeowner in Sydney's Northern Beaches went to put on his boots but discovered something small and furry in one of them! After using his phone camera to get a closer look, he soon realised it was a little sugar glider—an uncommon animal to find in this part of Sydney. The little marsupial was clinging to the boot tightly and refused to come out, prompting the homeowner to call WIRES. WIRES rescuer Anna quickly arrived and was able to carefully and safely remove the sugar glider. After an examination and some fluids, thankfully, the marsupial was in a healthy condition, so Anna transported him to a suitable gum tree nearby and released the sugar glider straight back to its own environment. Anna recalls, "For something so tiny, they are quite feisty. But his little face made up for it!" Help WIRES carers feed native animals in care this Giving Day. On Thursday, the 26th of September, the first $70,000 donated will be DOUBLED thanks to Woolworths Supermarkets and a generous anonymous donor. Today is National Threatened Species Day, a day that commemorates the heartbreaking loss of Australia’s last Tasmanian tiger in 1936. It’s also an important opportunity to reflect on the many challenges our iconic, yet fragile, native wildlife face today. Predation, land clearing, and climate change are just a few of the threats leaving our wildlife vulnerable and their future uncertain. From koalas to flying foxes and yellow-bellied gliders, WIRES has helped rescue thousands of threatened species over the past year. Those that survive need round-the-clock care to be rehabilitated and eventually released back into the wild. Providing wildlife-specific food and milk formula is the largest expense for our dedicated volunteers, who work tirelessly to give these animals a second chance at life. You can make a difference by supporting them on WIRES Giving Day, Thursday 26th September. The first $70,000 in donations will be DOUBLED, thanks to Woolworths Supermarkets and a generous anonymous donor. Macropod Buddies Thriving In Care 🦘🦘 Maddy and Beau are two lucky Swamp Wallabies, who are thriving in the care of WIRES volunteer Sandra. Like all the joeys who've come into WIRES care, their start to life was fraught with tragedy and sadness. Beau was in his mother's pouch when she was caught in an electric fence. She managed to break free, but Beau was sadly left behind. The homeowner transported the orphaned swamp wallaby to Kurrajong vet. Soon after, he was transported to Sandra by fellow WIRES volunteer Anne. Beau was given that nickname, as the homeowner's daughter called him 'Bo Bo'. Maddy, pictured eating a flower, was flung from its mother's pouch after she was struck by a car. A kind-hearted motorist spotted the joey and contacted WIRES. Anne quickly arrived and transported little Maddy to the vet for a check-up before taking the orphaned Swamp Wallaby to Sandra, who buddied her up with Beau. The two 'swampies' have since gone from strength to strength in Sandra's care, and are on their way to being released. A big thanks goes to Sandra and Anne, who teamed up to give these joeys a second chance. A special thanks also goes out to the members of the public who called WIRES, and the vets who assisted. Without their help, these swamp wallabies would not be alive today.

During spring, WIRES receives many calls about birds on the ground that might not actually need help. These young birds, known as fledglings, are leaving the nest but still rely on their parents for care and feeding. While fledglings may look vulnerable, the best thing to do is to leave them be and observe from a distance. Their parents are nearby, continuing to feed, protect, and teach them how to forage for food as they explore their new surroundings. 💚 Happy Father’s Day to All the Wild Dads! 💚 Today, we’re celebrating the incredible fathers of the animal kingdom—like the dedicated male fairy penguin, who takes turns with the mother incubating their eggs and keeping them warm in their burrow. Once the chicks hatch, these devoted dads continue to care for and feed them, ensuring they grow strong and healthy. Whether they’re furry, feathered, or finned, these wild dads play a crucial role in nurturing their young! Let’s take a moment to honour all the amazing fathers—animals and humans alike—who show us the true meaning of care and dedication. 🥚 📷: Ken Stepnell/DCCEEW

Tawny Frogmouth Release 🦉💚 WIRES were contacted by a concerned motorist, who witnessed a Tawny Frogmouth collide with a car on the freeway. WIRES volunteer Kylie attended the rescue and was overjoyed when she determined that this lucky Tawny had only suffered a mild concussion. A trip to Wilberforce Vet confirmed that he had no serious injuries. Kylie then monitored the Tawny Frogmouth overnight and released the grateful bird back into the wild.

Last Spring, WIRES assisted with over 𝟰𝟴,𝟬𝟬𝟬 rescue requests. On average, that is over 𝟱𝟯𝟬 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝘆. And with Spring just around the corner, WIRES urges everyone to cooperate with our hardworking volunteers and call centre staff. Without their compassion and dedication, countless native animals would be left without the help they desperately need. So, as we work around-the-clock to rescue, rehabilitate and release Aussie wildlife, here is what you can do to help distressed native animals in an emergency: 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗪𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗦: Call our Wildlife Rescue Office at 1300 094 737, so we can guide you and help save the animal you have found. 𝗗𝗢 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗔𝗖𝗛: Snakes, monitor lizards, bats, large macropods, koalas and raptors all require specialist handling and MUST be rescued by trained wildlife rescuers. 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀: Some vets provide free treatment for injured wildlife. Keep a list of local wildlife-friendly vets handy so you can take the animal there quickly if needed. 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲: Where you can do so safely remove any threat to the animal’s welfare, including keeping people and pets away to minimise stress while waiting for vet transport or for a rescuer to arrive. 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲: Learn more about native wildlife and share this knowledge with others. Encourage your community to be mindful of wildlife, especially when driving, gardening, or walking pets. Curious Kangaroos Caught on Camera 👀🦘 Two adventurous kangaroos hopping through a property in the Illawarra region of NSW stumbled upon one of WIRES’ wildlife cameras, leading to this adorable clip! WIRES Community Mange Treaters set up these wildlife cameras to monitor the activity of mange-affected wombats in the area. Mange is a painful, life-threatening infection and a leading cause of the decline in wombat populations across Australia. WIRES sincerely thanks every landowner, local volunteer and WIRES member who dedicates their time to tackling this awful affliction.
