Nowadays, it’s quite easy to get swept up in the negativity around our economic plight. Living costs are a very real concern, as are increasingly unaffordable house prices. But, as Australians, we’re also quite fortunate. Our economy has enjoyed an unprecedented run of growth, we’re highly educated, we’re resource-rich, and we have opportunities – one of which lies in energy creation. As Darren Brown, Co-Managing Director, Renewables at Octopus Investments Australia Investments tells it, there is “a really unique opportunity for Australia to become a superpower in renewable energy”. In the latest installment of the Rules of Investing podcast, Brown discusses the transformative changes taking place in the energy sector, the strategic initiatives underway, and the opportunities for investors in the renewable energy market in Australia. Brown's unique perspective, gained from his experience in both fossil fuels and renewables, provides valuable insights into the industry's evolution and the potential for long-term growth in the renewable energy space. The answers to these questions and more will be revealed at Livewire Live 2024, with the help of the following experts: Speakers 🎤 Nick Griffin, Founding Partner & Chief Investment Officer, Munro Partners  🎤 Jun Bei Liu, Lead Portfolio Manager, Tribeca Investment Partners 🎤 Jacob Mitchell, Chief Investment Officer & Lead Portfolio Manager, Antipodes Partners Livewire Live is shaping up to be an incredible event and we’ll be making more session and speaker announcements over the coming weeks. This week, we are kicking off our series of C-suite interviews as part of our coverage of the #ASX full-year reporting season. In this first interview, Hans Lee sits down with Suncorp Group CEO Steve Johnston. Here are three takeaways from that interview: 1. We are at the tail end of a multi-year slew of headwinds: Inflation, the reset of reinsurance costs, and the increase in natural hazards. But with that mellowing out comes a clear runway for insurers 2. Suncorp has had a very strong investment income business over the last few years (some healthy bets on inflation-linked bonds in particular). But with yields likely to come down and inflation continuing to moderate, Johnston tells me that the focus now moves to its underwriting business, claims management, and crucially, risk selection. If all three are handled well, it will offset any downturn in markets. 3. Investors can expect a trifecta of shareholder returns from Suncorp management - and if all goes well, that total return could amount to most (if not all) of the $4.1 billion earned from the sale of its bank. The brand new episode of Signal or Noise is out! Here are moderator Hans Lee's five key takeaways from today's episode - previewing the August #ASX reporting season. 1. Aggregate earnings expectations are forecast to fall 3-4% this August, but the market is just 5% off its all-time highs. A lot has to go right for a stock market that has no room for error. 2. Yet, as David Cassidy, Head of Investment Strategy at Wilsons Advisory pointed out in his chart, the aggregate picture looks grim but individual stocks like IAG and Origin Energy have been able to produce solid earnings even in a tough economic environment. 3. This market is not a one sector that decides all. CBA, which reports next week, has arguably the highest bar of any major company to report this month (given how expensive it is). Meanwhile, the ASX materials index is down 17% year-to-date, implying there could be some upside surprises in that sector... if their earnings deliver. And as Shane Oliver from AMP pointed out, the guidance from consumer stocks - particularly retailers - will give huge clues as to the resilience of the Australian consumer. 4. It may also pay to look at beaten-up stocks. Aaron Binsted from Lazard Asset Management talked about two of those in this episode. 5. Finally - it took until the 20th minute of the show to mention the word "interest rates" - this really will be a reporting season where individual stories matter.
