We were delighted to hear from Professor Jon Whittle, Director, CSIRO's Data61, on the double-edged sword that is #artificialintelligence. We dove further down the AI and cyber rabbit hole, exploring the potential of AI to revolutionize cyber defence, considering whether AI is a game-changer or a game-ender in cybersecurity. Thanks to Jon and our expert panellists, Anneliese McDowell, Executive Director, Telecommunications, Media & Technology Lead, CyberCX; Ade Ewart, Managing Director, Apteco Australia; and moderator Demetrio Zema, Director & Founder, Law Squared. Member news: We’re delighted to share Shell’s ‘The power of local community’ campaign! Through six touching short films, the campaign highlights how Shell Energy Australia works with local businesses and groups across Western Australia and Queensland to help them create a thriving community, today and for years to come. It’s wonderful to see our Members making a positive impact in the community. Betsy Verrall MBA Samantha Reichmann
At Shell, we care deeply about the communities where we operate. It’s where our people live and work and - like them - we want to see these communities thrive. I’m excited to share our new campaign, ‘The power of local community’ – a series of six short films from community champions in the regions where Shell Australia operates. These stories highlight how Shell works with local businesses and groups in these regions, to help them create a thriving community, today and for the years to come. This is a true demonstration of what we at Shell call Powering Lives and it’s a pillar of our global strategy. Filmed in Broome, Western Australia and Queensland’s Western Downs and Gladstone regions, the campaign showcases the beauty and diversity of these communities, and the spirit of the locals who are passionate about seeing their hometowns thrive. Thank you to our staff who play an essential role in working with our host communities. This campaign reflects your commitment to how Shell partners with these regions, and how our long-term and collaborative approach to community engagement has resulted in benefits for people that live and work in these areas. What a day! Our Australian British AI & Tech Summit wrapped up with thought-provoking discussions on Cyber - The State of Play and Data & Privacy. We started with a fantastic keynote from Charlie Hales, Managing Director, Waterstons Australia, who spoke to the widespread surge in AI adoption, its impacts on cyber, and safeguards to emerging threats. Rachael Falk, Chief Executive Officer, Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre, shared some of the CSCRC’s insights, and its work in enhancing Australia’s cyber security capability and capacity. Vikram Sharma FACS, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, QuintessenceLabs , gave us a mini masterclass on quantum, with an overview of the global quantum effort and quantum resilient cryptography. Then, onto the Marketer’s Perspective from Ade Ewart, Managing Director, Apteco Australia. Ade gave us the inside scoop on AI-enabled marketing and the perils of algorithmic bias, as well as an excellent overview of his platform! We closed the day with a firecracker of a Q&A moderated by Chamber Chief Executive Ticky Fullerton. Ade was joined by Sinead Lynch, Partner - Tech & Data Privacy, Gadens; and Stacey Edmonds MAICD, Chief Executive Officer, Dodgy or Not? for a conversation on data privacy, strategy and innovation, and beating scammers at their own game. We returned from lunch to hear from our second tech unicorn of the day – WiseTech Global. Richard White parachuted in for a fascinating conversation with Chamber Chief Executive Ticky Fullerton, touching on diversity and inclusion, and the many biases that shape our AI and tech savvy workforce. We moved on to funding the innovation economy, with a fantastic keynote from Alan Watters, Director, Tech Sector Lead - Australia and New Zealand, HSBC. Alan painted a clear picture for Australia’s innovation economy, stressing the importance of partnerships and financial firepower, “we need to recognise that innovation is not just a destination but a journey.” Alan was then joined by Alex Pollak, CIO at Loftus Peak; Richard Kimber, Board Chairman; Founder & Director, daisee; Malcolm Thornton, Head of Impact Capital, Clean Energy Finance Corporation; and (impromptu but excellent) moderator Jun Bei Liu, Portfolio Manager - Long Short Equities, Tribeca Investment Partners, for a panel bursting at the seams with innovation economy questions. After a short tea break, we were treated to a captivating fireside chat featuring Ahmed Mazhari, President, Microsoft Asia. Ahmed called for the demystification of AI – warning us of ‘unconscious incompetence’ in the AI and tech sphere. Too often, Ahmed cautioned, we make mountains out of mole hills and focus our energy on risk rather than the plentiful opportunities! Onto the secret sauce of tech unicorns, with a special keynote from David Tudehope, Chief Executive Officer, Macquarie Technology Group. David spoke to the purpose of a power-driven culture and the recipe for delivering a world-class customer experience. We continued the customer experience conversation with a keynote from the Hon Victor Dominello. Victor is no stranger to the Chamber – but this is the first time we've heard from him with his ServiceGen hat on. Victor shared five digital government initiatives to boost Australia’s productivity – from the public sector opportunity and methodology all the way to a productivity impact assessment. Our last session before lunch was on all things advanced manufacturing and robotics. We were wowed by David Goodrich OAM, Executive Chairman & CEO, Australia & Asia Pacific, Anduril Industries; Tom Loefler, Chief Executive Officer & Co-Founder, Hullbot; and Dr Heba Khamis, Chief Executive Officer, Contactile. This session highlighted diverse applications of AI and robotics – from its impacts on defence and war, the role of robotics in keeping a healthy ocean, and enabling robotic dexterity to further prosthetics research.
