8 harsh truths that’ll help you build a better career: 1. If you feel you’re underpaid, look in the mirror. Your pay is determined by the value you deliver, how well you negotiate, and the options you have. If your pay is too low, identify the issue and address it. 2. You can be top talent and still get passed over for jobs and promotions. There’s more to success than just your work. Build your network and soft skills to open more doors. 3. If you make your boss’s life harder, you’ll struggle to build a career. The good news is the opposite is also true. Make your boss’s life easier, and you should be rewarded. 4. Specialisation makes you good money. Become elite at one thing, then add more skills to your toolkit to thrive in complex roles. 5. If you gossip, it’ll come back to bite you. Most people don’t get away with badmouthing their colleagues for long. Avoid this problem by not saying anything in the first place. 6. Complaining is toxic. It bothers those around you and makes you complacent because you’re talking instead of acting. Don’t do it. Look for solutions. 7. You will most likely change jobs. You might even change careers. The idea of sticking with one company for 30 years sounds great, but statistics say you probably won’t. Make peace with moving around a bit. 8. It’s going to take longer than you think. Career success often takes 10-30 years and involves a lot of hard work and disappointment. Are you the sort of person that complains about their team but does nothing about it? Are you the sort of person that moans about the tools you've got to work with? Are you the sort of person who believes that the world owes them a favour? Are you the sort of person that says the timing isn't right to start that next project? Or do you just get on with it? Do you get your head down? Do you make the best of the situation? I've met so many “entrepreneurs” and business people who don't move forward with a project, who don't start something new, who blame their team or market conditions for things not being perfect. The reality is everyone can make something of any situation. Our recruitment business, in a supposedly tougher market, pulled in more jobs last month than any other month in the Middle East. Our Asia business is having a much better year because the team is working hard. They understand the reality that the only people who can make a difference are them. So when I see this train coming through in Sri Lanka and hear people moan about their commute, I think of the people on this train. They just get on with it and make stuff happen. That's what we need to do in life. Just get on with it and make stuff happen. Focus your energy on what genuinely makes a difference, and I assure you, you will win.
