How To Make A Culvert Garden Planter

A couple of months ago I dreamed up these planters. Thankfully, I have an awesome husband who can whip this sort of stuff up for me. I posted some pictures on Twitter and Facebook (and I'll be posting some on my new Instagram account too!) of my garden and people wanted to know more about the raised planters I'm using.

So, here is what they look like. I've got five of them made out of leftover culverts we owned and weren't using. Culverts are big drainage pipes that are used underground to carry water. Now, I'm sure not everyone has these just laying around, but you can check Craigslist and find them or call around and see if your city has any they want to get rid of. Otherwise, check with a plumbing supply house (not a Lowe's or Home Depot).

Here is what you will need:

Culverts (mine are 48" wide and 4' tall)
1 garden hose
1 roll of thin metal wire
Drill with 3/8" drill bit (or similar)
Razor knife
Level
Circular saw/sawzall/plasma cutter (one of the three)
Paint (if you're using a galvanized pipe, you'll need to make sure you have paint that will stick to galvanized metal)
Creek or clean gravel - enough to fill up half of your culvert
Garden grade dirt - enough to fill up the rest of your culverts

Directions:

1.) Measure and mark your culverts for cutting.

2. Cut your culverts to length using a circular saw with a metal blade, a sawzall or a plasma cutter if you have one.

3.) Paint the culvert. Let dry completely.

4.) Using your knife, cut a slit through one side of the garden hose (not all the way through it - it should remain in one piece) so that it will wrap around the top of the culvert (see picture below).

5.) Place garden hose on top of the pipe as shown below.

6.) Drill a hole right below the garden hose every 10-12".

7.) Thread metal wire around garden hose, through the hole you just drilled and tighten (shown below).

8.) Set your culvert in place and make sure it is level, side to side and front to back.

9.) Fill your culvert halfway with gravel. ***If you're only using these to grow shallow plants, like herbs, you can use more gravel and less dirt which will be less expensive. ***

10.) Fill remainder of the culvert with garden dirt leaving about 4" of space at the top.

11.) Plant your garden!

Here is one of my planters - this one has potatoes and onions! These planters are GREAT for anything that will grow down into the dirt like carrots, onions, garlic, potatoes, turnips etc.

Let me know if you have any questions!

A MEGA SIZED Craft for Under $100

I have been busy re-doing my entire home office. I've painted all of my furniture and I can't wait to show it to you, but first is this huge, but simple, craft project.

I knew I wanted a Union Jack in my office, since it's sort of British themed (more on that in another post) office. I ordered this gigantic flag - it's five feet by eight feet. Originally I was just going to put it on the wall and call it a day but then I had a great idea.

Thankfully, I have a great husband to go along with my great idea, and while I was painting furniture, he made me this:

It's a GIANT cork board.

And I LOVE it. It's exactly what I wanted.

Here's how to do it:

Supplies:
1 sheet of MDF cut to size (mine was 4*8')
12*12" square pieces of cork purchased 1/2 off at Hobby Lobby (get the kind that come with adhesive backing)
1 flag
Six 1/4" by 3" lag screws
Duck tape
Staple gun

Directions:
First, adhere the cork boards to the MDF. Wrap the flag around it, making sure it's centered and tack in place using duck tape. Once you have the flag where you want it, tape it to the board, then shoot the staples through the tape to keep the flag from tearing. Screw board into wall studs (it's heavy!). We put a screw through each corner and 2 in the center (see above picture).

For less than $100 I have a useable piece of art that fills up my wall! Big impression, small investment! Win-Win!

Pirate's Paradise: My Boy's New Bunk Room

For about the last year, my kids have been begging to share a room. We finally decided it was time to go for it, and we picked a pirate theme, since they LOVE all things pirate related!

We actually had this bunk bed already (long story) so we decided to use it. We draped decorative fishing netting on the end of it.

I ordered their bedding and drapes from Target because it was both cute and affordable!

Here's a closeup of the bedding:

We hit up Hobby Lobby on Saturday and scored all of our little knick knacks and frames for half off (including the netting!).

See these maps I have around the room? They were FREE. I customized park maps of all the Disney parks online and they mailed them to me free of charge.

And finally, this is their little play area:

They absolutely LOVE their new room and are having the best time sharing it. I know that sooner than later they will want their own space back, but this will be so fun while it lasts, and I'm sure they'll cherish these memories as they grow older!

One Cleaning Tip Every Mom Should Know

Last night I was taking apart an Otter Box that belongs to my kids. Lo and behold there is red crayon all over the back of the white plastic casing. I googled how to remove it and found all sorts of answers ranging from oil to magic erasers. Finally, I decided to use one of my favorite two (very basic) house cleaning products...

Why am I blogging this? Because a lot of you are moms with young kids like me and the chances that you will encounter a similar problem are pretty good. So, here is the Otter Box with red crayon:

And here is the clean Otter Box minus red crayon. (Sorry for the crummy iPhone pics).

How did I get it clean?

This is so simple it's silly. Just combine 1 tablespoon of baking soda with a few drops of water to make a thick paste. Use a damp cloth with some of the paste and scrub in circular motions and a few minutes later, you will have clean plastic!

Sweetened Passion Tea Lemonade {Copycat Starbucks Recipe}

My favorite spring/summer drink is Starbucks passion tea lemonade (sweetened, of course). I LOVE that stuff. It's so great. I'm usually a drive through kind of gal, but once I went in and watched them assemble my drink. It has to be one of the easiest things the baristas make because it's just three ingredients: Lemonade, passion tea and if you want it sweetened, simple syrup.

I decided to make my own at home, but instead of making the simple syrup (equal parts water and sugar, boiled until the sugar dissolves and then cooled) I just used sugar and dissolved it in the hot tea.

And it was FABULOUS.

You must make this at home! Your wallet will thank you!

{Copycat Starbucks} Passion Tea Lemonade

2 Tazo Passion Tea bags
Lemonade (I use Simply Lemonade)
1 cup white sugar
Water

Fill a small pot with 5 cups of water. Bring water to a boil. Turn heat off, add teabags, cover with lid. Let steep for 10 minutes.

While the tea is steeping, add 1 cup sugar to a large pitcher. Once tea is steeped, pour into pitcher and stir to dissolve sugar. Add lemonade until the pitcher is full. Stir to combine, store in the fridge.

10 Unique Valentines Day Gift Ideas for HIM!

Is it just me, or is shopping for your husband for Valentines Day ridiculously difficult? I always feel like the Valentines Day gifts need to be loaded with meaning, thought and love. I think I am becoming a gift giving over achiever but I blame this on Chris. He is the gift giving KING.

This year, I'm on a winning streak. I started keeping a notes page in my phone when I was working on this years 150 Stocking Stuffers list, and then it occurred to me to do the same thing just for my family members. If someone said there was something in particular that they liked or wanted, I'd write it in my phone (because my memory is AWFUL).

Thanks to that little trick I would just like to say that I totally owned Christmas gift giving this year, and I plan to do the same this Valentines Day. I wish I could tell you which of the following gifts my husband will be receiving this year but I can't because he reads my blog (awww).

I will update you after Valentines Day and let you know what I got him though. ;-)

I love this idea - a manly looking leather cuff bracelet with the latitude and longitude coordinates of a place that means something special to you. You could use the coordinates of where you got engaged or married, or the hospital where you had your kids. The possibilities are endless, and this is one of those great personalized gifts that is still very masculine.

Longitude Latitude Bracelet from Dakota Designs.

One of my husbands favorite gifts ever was when I had his very favorite Chicago pizzeria ship him one of their pizzas. In fact, he loved it SO much that I did it again the next year. Chris LOVES Giordanos pizza, and it's always our first stop when we're in Chicago. You can order your own heart shaped deep dish pizza from them too! Click here to visit their site.

This next one is kind of funny. This could be your husbands go to, get out of the dog house free pass. I really kind of love it. ;-)

I Love My Wife T-shirt from Sun Frog.

This is a really fun and creative idea. I've been talking with Chris about having a map made that we can mark out all of the places we want to go visit during our lifetime. I wanted something that we could use push pins on and color coordinate them based on places we've been, want to go, etc. I found this great shop on Etsy that does just that. You can even add pictures on the side of it if you want.

World Map from TexturedINK.

I love this idea for any of you who have musically inclined husbands. SnappinPicks on Etsy has lots of adorable pick jewelry. This particular piece can also be purchased as a necklace.

For the quintessential bacon loving man, you have got to try Nueske's Bacon. It has been a favorite of ours for years. It is seriously the very best bacon I've ever had. You can get your man the Bacon Sampler Pack here.

For you crafty types, here's a great one. Make your own scratcher card for your man! Alison over at Oopsey Daisy has a great tutorial on how you can make your own adorable scratcher, and she even includes a free printable. Check it out here

For the grill master, you should check out a custom cutting board. I love this one from Williams-Sonoma

If you have a long distance love or maybe you've moved from one state to another, these mugs would make a great gift. It's the outline of the state with a heart on the place you live(d). I love the clean design! Check them out at Mady's Musings on Etsy.

Lastly, who doesn't love a homemade treat? This is especially great if you don't bake a ton (it just makes it that much more special!). Bake up a tray of goodies just for your man - he can take them to work and brag about you! Try my Valentines Cookie Bars. They're super easy and delicious!

My Super Bowl Menu {What Are YOU Making?}

This year my favorite team is playing in the Super Bowl (GO BRONCOS!) and we are having some people over for the big game.

For us, the Super Bowl means a free pass on food. It's really the one day that we eat "junk" for dinner! So, this year, my husband is making his awesome smoked ribs (I dream about these...literally, they are THAT good) and we're also having wings, because, well, duh. ;-)

I'm also making a plethora of dips. The only one I haven't posted yet is my corn dip (you can watch for that next week!). I'm also making all of these:

10 Minute Bean Dip

Simple Spinach Dip

And I need to figure out what to make for dessert.

Last year I made these Sour Cream Chocolate Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Fudge Frosting.

I'm not sure what I'm going to make this year. I thought about my mom's Tri-Level Brownies:

And my Peanut Butter Brownie Cups because they are SO easy.

What are you making for the Super Bowl?

Chores for Toddlers

I feel it's my duty as a mom of boys to raise them up right for their future wives. ;-)

I'm so lucky that I have a husband who helps me daily around the house. There is no chore that he won't do, and some he does a better job on than I do. For example, you will never see me iron anything because I am HORRIBLE at it. On Saturday nights, he asks if I need anything ironed for church the next morning.

There are so many chores that toddlers can help out with and I'm of the belief that if you start them off young, they will just always be used to doing things to help out. So, I've got some age appropriate chore ideas of my own below, and I'd love for you to leave your ideas in the comments!

Move the furniture!

When I'm vacuuming my guys will go in front of me and move things out of the way (like the ottoman in the family room, their chairs at the dining table etc) so that I can vacuum underneath them. They love when I give them individual tasks as well, like, "Brody, move the toy telescope" or "Brayden, grab the other vacuum attachment for me."

Arrange the pillows!

We have 11 decorative pillows in the family room that either get moved, used for a fort, tossed on the floor or otherwise displaced throughout the day. Each pillow has a specific place (they're different patterns) and at the end of the day, the boys get to put them back where they go.

Clear your plate!

After each meal, the kids clean off their plate, put it in the sink and put their milk back in the fridge. We don't leave plates around for mom to come clean up after!

Help with the dishwasher!

This is one of Brayden's favorites. He loves stacking up the kids plates and helping put silverware away. I always do the knives but he is great with the forks and spoons!

The playroom is YOUR room!

We have a playroom adjacent to the family room. All of their toys and movies are kept there and now that they are 3 & 5, it's their responsibility to pick up after themselves. There is a ton of storage in there and everything has it's own place. They know where everything goes and if they want to play, then they have to keep the playroom neat. I don't allow many toys in their bedrooms because that is where they are supposed to sleep only, but what they do have in there, they have to keep picked up.

Laundry!

Each morning when the boys change into their clothing, they are responsible for taking their pajamas to the dirty clothes basket. When I do laundry, they love helping load the washer, move the clean clothing to the dryer and even fold small towels.

There are lots of other things the boys like to help out with. They always help me bring in the groceries and "cook" but these are the things they do most commonly.

What chores do your toddlers do?

Our Ugly Sweater Christmas Eve Party

If you follow me on twitter, you've probably heard about our Ugly Sweater party we held at our house this Christmas Eve. It was ridiculously fun! I've been a slacker at uploading my pictures but I've finally sat down to do it!

PS - I still owe you two posts on our Disney World trip, one on where to eat and the other on miscellaneous tips. They're coming, I promise! The food one is actually already written, I just need to post it!

Let's start with what you've been waiting for; pictures of the sweaters!

Chris went as Eddie from Christmas Vacation which is one of our favorite movies. I decorated a plain green sweater I bought at the Goodwill for $4 with garland I had and some cheap ornaments and topped it off with an old tree topper that was laying around so that I looked like a Christmas tree, and the boys wore sweatshirts that had a fair isle print. Brody's looked like the abominable snowman and Brayden's was an homage to Christmas Vacation.

My brother and sister-in-law ordered their sweaters online and they were hysterical looking. You can't see Stephanie's because Evie is in front of it, but she has a cross-stitching hoop on it. They were both over the top!

I think my mom should get the most creative award because she made both her and my dad's sweaters. Dad looks like a gingerbread man and his sweater actually lit up! Moms had poof balls, ribbon and garland all over it and she had a bird that sat on her shoulder but by the time I took the picture, Brody had stolen it!

Chris' mom and step-dad were also very creative. Lori made Charles' sweater using a placemat! She also attached a large Santa to the front of it!

Chris' dad, step-mom and step sister got in on the fun as well. They lucked out and found some great sweaters at Goodwill. I checked every store in our area and couldn't find a single pre-made ugly sweater! Next year I'm visiting their town to shop!

Unfortunately, Chris' brother and his girlfriend popped a tire on the way to the party and then weren't able to make it. =(

I mentioned my baking extravaganza on twitter as well. When all was said and done, I made 22 dozen cookies, 6 dozen oreo balls (peanut butter and mint), layer cookies, lemon bars, scotcheroos, fudge and spreads. It took me three solid days of baking but it was worth it! You can see in the left corner of this picture that I bought everyone ugly sweater take out boxes so that they could take a lot of desserts home with them!

We also made a smoked ham and prime rib and I made homemade yeast rolls (recipe coming soon) and everyone brought sides. After dinner, my dad read the real story of Christmas from the Bible and the kids put on special Christmas Eve jammies that my mom bought them:

We also voted on the ugliest sweater and by an overwhelming majority, my brother won! I had a trophy made that has ugly sweaters on it for the winner and also gave him a small fruitcake.

A close up of the inscription:

I hope you all had a great Christmas!

Luke 2: 10-11
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

DIY: Christmas Tree Barrel Stand

This year I wanted to do something different with our tree. We'd been using the no-sew ruffled burlap tree skirt I made (tutorial for that is here) for the last couple of years, but I wanted a change.

I was browsing Pottery Barn and Ballards magazines and saw these cute barrel tree stands but they were ridiculously priced (think around $150). I showed Chris the picture and he said he could make one for way less than that and he did.

In fact ours cost a whopping $35!

A big thanks to my husband for sharing this tutorial!

Here's how he did it:

Equipment needed:

Purchase a barrel from your local garden store. Ours had one left!
Leftover stain
Tree stand (the one that comes with your fake tree)
2' by 2' piece of MDF or plywood - whatever you have leftover from other projects
One 4' long 2x4
1 12x12 concrete paver
Nail gun or finishing nails
4 bolts that are 3" long by 1/4" thick
8 washers
4 nuts
String
Pencil
Power saw/hacksaw
Drill
Level

How to:

Place paver in the bottom of the barrel.

Cut a 2x4 to sit on top of the paver touching side to side. Nail through the barrel into the 2x4.

Repeat with another piece of 2x4 to make an X shape over the paver. Nail this piece in as well.

Measure the height of your tree stand. Let's say it's 4". Add 2" to that number and make a mark on the inside of the barrel 6" down. (Another example: If your stand is 3" tall you would add 2" and mark 5" down).

At that mark, measure across the barrel to get the diameter from that exact point across the inside of the barrel. Divide that number in half. Put a nail in the center of your piece of MDF/plywood and attach a piece of string that measures out to that half length. Attach a pencil to the other end and use to draw a circle on the plywood. You should end up with a circle that will fit right down inside of your barrel.

Take your tree stand and place it over the circle (which you have NOT yet put into the barrel). Use your saw of choice to cut off the ends of the stand that do not fit within the circle.

Next, use your drill to drill through the new ends of the tree stand and through the wood. Do this about 3" up from the end of the leg. Put a washer through the bolt and then put the bolt through both holes. The put a washer and nut on the other nut. Tighten it down. Repeat on 3 remaining legs.

Move the entire thing into the barrel and level it. Use a hammer to tap it into place taking care to make sure it is completely level from all angles. Use finishing nails to secure the barrel from the outside. Use 1 nail every 2.5"to make sure it's very secure.

Stain the barrel. Let dry overnight.

The next day, check to make sure stain is completely dry. I used 2 bags of fake snow to fill in the top of mine!

2 Free Countdown to Disney Printables!

I decided to make a quick little countdown to Disney chart for my kids the other day. It's not perfect by any means, but it works! I love all the ideas for frames where you can erase the number and change it each day, but Brody is too young to understand that method, so, for us, doing something like this where they can cross off each day just works better!

There are two printables - one for Disneyland and one for Disney World! Feel free to print off a copy and use it for your family too!

Note: Non commercial use only. Please credit my blog if using this image on Pinterest, and do not claim work as your own or share image elsewhere without permission.
