I read a book. One made out of paper.

I read a book.  One made out of paper.  My sister-in-law book junkie Melissa posted this blog in January.  She read 39 books in 2011.  I read 0 (Not counting programming books).  So I made a goal to read a book this year.  I finished Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger on Sunday.

I think that this is the 2nd paper book I have read since I finished school.  (I read Seven Summits before Sara was born)   I've read some Audible books but not actually held and read a real paper book.

I was at Melissa's house in November trying to find a book to read to meet my goal.  I picked this one because it looked thin (214 pages).  And it is a famous book so the next time I'm talking with really smart and well read people I can pretend to be smart and well read too (as long as we just talk about that one book).

It was an interesting book.  It was an easy read.  I got out of this book:
  1. Everyone is phony including yourself.
  2. Your perception of yourself is distorted and incorrect.
  3. It's easy to see flaws in others.  Harder to see that you have the same flaws.
  4. Your perception of  others is distorted and incorrect.
  5. If I could write down all the thoughts I had over a week and then read them with a 3rd person perspective what would I find?  What would I want to change?
  6. The world is not what it seems when you are a child.  The transition to adulthood can be confusion and scary as you realize it isn't what you thought it was and isn't how it should be.
I think that Salinger could have made these points in fewer words though.  After a while it got a little exhausting being stuck in a teenagers head.  I started to be aware of and count down the number of pages left.  Overall I'm glad I read it.  I think it was worth the time.

I'm now taking suggestions on a book to read next year in comments below.

P.S. Thanks Melissa for the motivation and encouragement to read a book and lending it to me.

No more baby

We went to our ultrasound today but instead of finding out the gender we learned that the baby didn't have a heartbeat. We are going to IMC at 8 tonight to deliver it.  We are 19 weeks in the pregnancy but the baby stopped growing at 15 weeks. Sad news.  This is our second late term miscarriage.

Ice Skating

We went ice skating with our Brown cousins.  The place was almost empty so we basically had a private skate session.  That was great because Evie and Eliza hadn't skated before.  They were naturals though and were going around the rink by them selves after 30 minutes.

Zoo

We went to the zoo to see the new bears exhibit Rocky Shores.  The kids loved seeing the polar bear swim.  The black bears were sleeping though.

Evie Learned to ride her bike

Evie learned how to ride her bike.  We used the take the pedals off the bike method.  She then rode it as a scooter until she learned how to balance.  Then she practically taught herself.  Now she rides it non-stop.

Jumping off Rocks

While we waited for Grandma Wilkey and Mom to finish eating we jumped off rocks.  I was really impressed with Randy's jumping ability.

We took at trip to Logan to visit Rachel. We saw horses and kissed on the Aggie A.  Rachel is now a true Aggie.
