We have started to have some fun with paints recently and the boy is really beginning to enjoy himself now that he has realised he doesn’t HAVE to get his hands really messy.
So far we have had fun painting with empty toilet rolls and pom poms, and this week we had some fun with potatoes too.
I had a few new potatoes in the vegetable basket that had started to go a bit sprouty so, using a small sharp kitchen knife, I cut these in half and carved out shapes into the surface to use as stamps.
I managed a square, a triangle, a rectangle, an oval and a crescent. I’m afraid my attempt at a star was terribly wonky so that went straight in the bin!
I then squeezed a few blobs of coloured paint into an old plastic food tray and let the boy go to work on some white card.
We used this as an opportunity to practice some shape recognition with him selecting the correct shape from the selection of potato shapes in front of him and he did pretty well.
We even turned one attempt into a birthday card for a friend.
I am so pleased that he is beginning to enjoy painting and appears to be getting over his initial fears. We even got a bit messy this time!

This looks like fun! E still insists on eating ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING when I try and get her painting – when does that stop? I can’t wait until she gets that it’s all about the mess!

I am not sure Mama H! It will stop eventually I am sure. If not we have also tried painting with marshmallows which I will post soon and pinterest is full of ideas of how to make safe paint for babies with flour and food colouring etc.

I can’t wait until we get to this stage. I love the home-made birthday card too, it is really important to use art projects and not discard them. Well done for being able to carve a crescent!

Well to be honest it was kind of just quarter of a potato LOL 🙂

We’ve done this once in the past, I forget how fun and EASY it was. I’d love if you shared this on our #kidsinthekitchen linky http://lookwhatmomfound.com/2013/05/homemade-versus-store-bought-kidsinthekitchen.html
