W is now pretty happy identifying most colours and one of the games which I found helped with this is as simple as can be.
He just loves to play with OXO cubes!
Once he has finished eating I will often grab the boxes from the cupboard, red, yellow and green, and place them in front of him.
We will then tip them all out, his favourite part…
…and I will encourage him to put them back into the right coloured box.
He is quite happy to to do this over and over, tipping them out, and re-sorting into appropriate boxes…
…even building towers with them.
This also allows me time to get the dishes done!
This is such a simple and easy game with kitchen cupboard staples.
Skills this will improve:
- Colour recognition
- Colour naming
- Colour matching
- Fine motor skills putting cubes in and out of the boxes

Fantastic. Shows you don’t have to spend loads on toys

Thanks Louise, I have found that he plays with the stuff we make out of cardboard and toilet paper tubes loads too so you are definitely right!

Does he not just chew on the oxo cubes ??! I guess he has probably passed that stage. I just have visions of chewed up wet oxo cube everywhere – gross !
A great idea though, I shall have a dig in our cupboards and find some 🙂

Thankfully no, though 6 months or so ago this may have been a problem!
