Patti Yasutake, who portrayed Nurse Alyssa Ogawa on Star Trek: The Next Generation and a pair of franchise movies and Fumi Nakai, the widowed mother of Joseph Lee’s sculptor, on Beef, has died. She was 70.
Yasutake died Monday at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center after a long battle with a rare form of T-cell lymphoma, her longtime manager, Kyle Fritz, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“Patti was my first client when I began over 30 years ago,” he said in a statement. “We enjoyed every day we got to work together, and I will miss her spirit talent and tenacity but most of all her friendship.”
The Los Angeles native also played a relocated Japanese wife earnestly trying to Americanize in the Ron Howard-directed Gung Ho (1986) and on its ABC series adaptation that lasted just nine episodes in 1986-87.

Charles Cyphers, known for his role as Sheriff Leigh Brackett in the “Halloween” franchise, died from a brief illness in Tucson, Ariz., on Sunday, his manager Chris Roe announced. He was 85.
“Charles was a lovable and sensitive man,” Roe said in a statement shared with Variety. “He always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you. He was a close friend and client of many years who will be dearly missed.”
Cyphers first played Sheriff Brackett in John Carpenter’s 1978 horror film “Halloween,” starring Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie in her film debut. He reprised his role in the 1981 sequel “Halloween II” and 2021’s “Halloween Kills.”
Cyphers initially worked with Carpenter on the 1976 action film “Assault on Precinct 13,” in which he played Starker, a police officer. After the original “Halloween,” Cyphers appeared in the filmmaker’s 1980 horror pic “The Fog” and 1981 film “Escape From New York.

Anime has been big in the West ever since the days of “Sailor Moon” and “Speed Racer,” but these days, the Japanese art form has been getting mainstream shout outs left and right. At the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, multiple of the world’s greatest athletes celebrated their wins by striking poses or otherwise making reference to anime favorites like “Yu Gi Oh” and “One Piece.” Earlier this summer, Megan Thee Stallion released a whole song, “Otaku Hot Girl,” about her love for anime, referencing and sampling a song from “Jujutsu Kaisen.”
This cultural growth isn’t surprising if you pay attention and see how the market has grown. In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, the industry grossed $21.3 billion worldwide — and that was after a small Covid induced downturn. Anime films like “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” and “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” proved that fans would turn up in theaters, with both...

Sally Field recently told Vanity Fair that Robin Williams made arrangements for her to leave the “Mrs. Doubtfire” set when her father died during filming. Field had not planned to disrupt the production due to the personal matter, but Williams could tell something was off about his co-star and made director Chris Columbus change the order of filming so that the production could shoot around Field for a day.
“I never shared this story before,” Field said. “I was in the camper outside of the courtroom where we were shooting the divorce scene. My father had a stroke a couple of years before, and was in a nursing facility. I got a phone call from the doctor saying my father had passed — a massive stroke. He asked if I wanted them to put him on the resuscitator. I said, ‘No, he did not want that. Just let him go. And please lean down and say,...

“Wolfs,” the upcoming crime film that reunites George Clooney and Brad Pitt, is pivoting its theatrical release plan from a wide release to a limited one before it lands on Apple TV+. And though that may not sound like a vote of confidence, Apple has just announced a sequel for “Wolfs” before it’s even opened.
Jon Watts writes and directs “Wolfs,” and it was originally supposed to get a wide theatrical release on September 20 after first premiering at the Venice Film Festival. That release date is staying the same, but instead of getting a long run in theaters, Apple has also announced when it will drop on Apple TV+, one week later on September 27.

Netflix has forged its first ever partnership with Toho, Japan’s leading film studio, to remake 1960 science fiction feature The Human Vapor.
Human Vapor will be written by Yeon Sang-ho, the South Korean filmmaker behind hit zombie thriller Train To Busan, and directed by Shinzo Katayama of Disney+ drama-horror series Gannibal and 2021 feature Missing.
While plot details remain under wraps, the original centres on the victim of a scientific experiment who can transform himself into gas and uses these powers to commit robberies and kill those who stand in his way. It was directed by Ishiro Honda and featured effects by Eiji Tsuburaya,...

Apple Original Films is shaking up its release strategy as it doubles down on the upcoming action-comedy “Wolfs,” starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
Apple has made a deal with director Jon Watts to helm, write and produce a sequel for the A-list stars.
The film, which will premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, was originally slated for a wide release before hitting Apple TV+. Now, it’s set for a one-week limited theatrical release on Sept. 20, followed by an Apple TV+ debut on Sept. 27.
In “Wolfs,” Clooney plays a professional fixer hired to cover up a high profile crime. But when a second fixer (Pitt) shows up and the two “lone wolves” are forced to work together, they find their night spiraling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected. The cast also includes Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, Poorna Jagannathan, Richard Kind and Zlatko Burić.

Warner Bros Discovery took a massive $9.1bn write-down in the second quarter as the media giant reevaluated in light of the ongoing soft linear TV advertising market and its recent – albeit contested – loss of NBA domestic basketball rights.
Overall revenue dropped 5% year-on-year to $9.7bn, the company announced in its Q2 earnings on Wednesday, while the direct to consumer segment experienced a $107m loss after posting an $86m profit in the first quarter, and posted revenue of $2.6bn after a 6% year-on-year drop.
Streaming subscriptions over the three-month period ended June 30 increased by 3.6m or 4% to reach 103.3m, with global average revenue...

Actress Patti Yasutake, best known to Trekkies as Nurse Alyssa Ogawa, died on August 5, 2024, of a rare type of T-cell lymphoma. She was 70 years old.
Nurse Ogawa first appeared on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in the episode "Future Imperfect" more or less as a background character. She was one of Dr. Crusher's retinue of medical staff, there to give viewers the impression that the ship's sickbay was constantly bustling. She went on to star in 14 additional episodes of the show, and was usually merely standing next to Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden), passing her tools or saying "Yes, Doctor." She had a good bedside manner, and her repeated appearances had viewers wondering who she was and what her story might be. As the series progressed, Nurse Ogawa's role expanded incrementally, eventually leading to her becoming a legitimate supporting player.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” director Shawn Levy shut down rumors on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that Patrick Stewart was going to return as Charles Xavier in the record-breaking Marvel blockbuster. While several actors who once played superheroes in Fox-backed Marvel movies popped up, from Jennifer Garner’s Elektra to Wesley Snipes’ Blade, Stewart was “never considered” to reunite with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine on screen.
“Never even discussed,” Levy said when asked about Stewart’s rumored return. “And it was studied. Studied by Emma Corrin big time because the Cassandra sibling-hood to Professor X is really interesting to us. But no, never discussed. Never, never considered.”
Fans thought Stewart might be back as Professor X in “Deadpool & Wolverine” due to his rich history of starring opposite Jackman in several “X-Men” movies dating back to the 2000 original. The 2017 tentpole “Logan” served as both Jackman and Stewart’s swan songs...

No matter how bad your summer vacations have been, they could in no way compare to the sheer horror of the villa getaway in “The Decameron,” one that is as filled with black comedy as it is with the Black Death.
Set in 14th-century Italy, Newtflix’s eight-episode limited series finds a group of (mostly) nobles fleeing the death and decay surrounding them to wall themselves away in a fortified palace, where they plan to frolic, drink, and generally be merry. Human nature being what it is, however, their plans are quickly derailed, and the show takes on a darker tone as the body count rises.
Along the way, there are enough secret identities and miscommunication to populate a Shakespeare play (though Giovanni Boccaccio’s book predates the Bard by a few hundred years). With a large ensemble and ever-shifting alliances, the costume design must pull its weight to keep...

Though it seems sort of strange to think of now, when "The Umbrella Academy" first premiered on Netflix back in 2019, there was a chance that it would become one of the streamer's original series that came and went, maybe even in just one season. Instead, the show became a bonafide hit, spawning three more seasons and introducing a whole new legion of fans, or "Brellies," to the weird world of "The Umbrella Academy." Sure, fans of the original comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá knew what to expect, but for the rest of the world, "The Umbrella Academy" seemed sort of like the emo "X-Men," and that meant there were some doubts even from members of the cast.

Warner Bros. Discovery just realized its TV networks are worth $9.1 billion less than it originally thought, leading to a net loss of $10 billion in the second quarter of 2024.
The massive plummet in valuation is being recognized as a “non-cash goodwill impairment charge” primarily coming from the “Networks” section of the company. That must have been one eye-opening internal audit.
Wbd blames the devastating change in value to the “difference between market capitalization and book value” due to a soft U.S. advertising market and “uncertainty” surrounding future carriage deals. And oh yeah, the loss of the NBA certainly doesn’t help.
Wbd CEO David Zaslav said on Wednesday’s earnings call that market valuations two years ago when they first merged in April 2022, were “quite different than they are today,” and doing this “acknowledges” that change in value and “better aligns” them with their goals moving forward. The anime industry just got hit with one of the worst leaks in history. Though spoilers and small leaks are relatively common, particularly phone-recorded leaks at big events like Anime Expo, production screeners of upcoming titles don't tend to leak very often. What makes this an especially egregious leak is that multiple high-profile productions suffered episode leaks -- and of multiple episodes each.
The leak began with the opening and ending themes for anticipated titles like the remake of "Ranma ½," as well as the opening for the "Dandadan" anime adaptation. But then it snowballed and the leak is threatening multiple areas of the industry. According to AnimeNewsNetwork, the first four episodes of "Ranma ½," the first six episodes of "Dandadan," the premiere of "Re:zero -Starting Life in Another World-" season 3, the movie "Mononoke the Movie: Phantom in the Rain," and even all eight episodes of the upcoming "Terminator Zero...

Warner Bros. Discovery has at long last crossed 100 million direct-to-consumer subscribers — but that will not be what the second quarter of 2024 is remembered for. No, the history books will mark spring 2024 as the time Wbd realized its TV networks were worth $9 billion less than it originally thought.
President and CEO David Zaslav doesn’t want to talk about it. His prepared remarks accompanying the company’s Q2 2024 financials:
“At Warner Bros. Discovery, our top priority is our global direct-to-consumer business and we are extremely pleased with the growing momentum we are seeing, as demonstrated by another strong quarter of growth with 3.6 million net adds, fueled by our ongoing international expansion and investment in high quality, diverse content. In light of industry headwinds, we have and will continue taking bold steps, like reimagining our existing linear partnerships and pursuing new bundling opportunities, with the goal to get Max on the devices...

It sure sounds like Addison Rae will be joining Eli Roth at the “Thanksgiving” table again.
Shortly after the first turkey day-themed horror movie “Thanksgiving” was released in November, it was announced that a sequel was being developed.
Roth, the director and co-writer of the first and second films, tells me that he and co-writer Jeff Rendell are about to hand in the follow-up script to the studio.
When I asked if Rae would be returning – her character is one of the few survivors at the end of the first movie – Roth smiled.
“I love Addison Rae,” he said Tuesday at the premiere of his new video game movie adaptation, “Borderlands.” “We kept her alive for a reason. It doesn’t feel like a ‘Thanksgiving’ movie without Addison Rae.”
Even so, sources tell me that Rae’s deal has not been officially signed yet.

Despite being banned from theaters at its initial 1974 release for its shocking violence, Tobe Hooper’s “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” remains among the most influential horror films in history — and one that’s inspired countless remakes, sequels, spinoffs, and imitators.
Hooper, who would later direct the cult series “Salem’s Lot” (1979) and the ’80s phenomenon “Poltergeist” (1982), was a documentary cinematographer and an assistant film director at the University of Texas-Austin in the early ’70s. Co-written by Kim Henkel, “Texas Chain Saw” was remarkably only his sophomore feature following his 1969 psychedelic debut “Eggshells,” which Henkel also co-wrote and starred in.
In “Texas Chain Saw,” Sally (Marilyn Burns), her brother Franklin (Paul A. Partain), and their friends go on a doomed road trip in Texas County. While we wait for the 50th season of "Saturday Night Live" to begin, complete with Maya Rudolph returning as Vice President Kamala Harris, another era of the late night sketch comedy series will soon be getting the spotlight too. Jason Reitman, director of "Juno" and "Up in the Air," is digging back into the annals of comedy history with his latest cinematic effort, "Saturday Night." The film will chronicle the relatively short window of time leading up to the October 1975 premiere of "Saturday Night Live," though the series wouldn't debut with that full title, premiering only as "Saturday Night."
"Saturday Night," described as a "comedy-thriller" by Reitman himself, promises to dig into all the behind-the-scenes chaos and drama that led to the breakthrough live comedy experiment that would become a late night staple and spawn some of the biggest names in comedy, starting with the Not Ready for Primetime Players like Dan Aykroyd,...

Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” will be re-released in honor of its 10th anniversary. However, the sci-fi epic is flying back to theaters slightly behind schedule.
The Paramount Pictures film was slated to return on Sept. 27 but will instead land roughly two months later on Dec. 6. It will be shown in 70mm Imax prints, as well as digital screens. The theatrical release date was pushed to align with the home entertainment relaunch, according to knowledgable individuals. Warner Bros. Pictures, which co-produced the movie, is working with Paramount on the revival.
Studio sources dispute a rumor that 70mm prints of “Interstellar” were destroyed; Paramount claims it has archived more copies of the movie than most other pictures. However, because reels of film experience wear and tear while playing on the big screen, it’s not uncommon for them to be unusable after their theatrical runs.

Writer/director Jazmin Jones’ e-girl, DIY investigation “Seeking Mavis Beacon” premiered in the Next section at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, stoking chatter about its complex inquiry into Black representation. Alongside producer Olivia Olivia McKayla Ross, Bay Area filmmaker Jones try to chase down a woman named Renee L’Esperance, who served as the cover model for an early-ai computer typing program “Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing,” one of the most popular education software tools of all time. The program first launched in 1987. Watch the trailer for the film below.
As the documentary tells us, L’Esperance was spotted working a counter at a Los Angeles department store before eventually getting paid $500 to become Mavis Beacon, who inspired a kind of Mandela effect where people believed she was an actual person. As IndieWire wrote at the Sundance Film Festival, “This poignant documentary finds the filmmakers on her trail but only to eventually...

Doug Liman still has a bone to pick with Amazon MGM Studios over what happened to “Road House,” but he and others may put that bad blood aside if Amazon is as serious about expanding as it’s hinting around town.
As first reported in Reuters, Amazon and MGM want to ramp up to 16 theatrical releases per year by 2027, which a source with knowledge told IndieWire is accurate.
That’s more than double where the companies are at now, with just six theatrical titles planned in 2024. The 16 titles also doesn’t include any movies Amazon would release outside the U.S., the movies that it might acquire from other studios (sometimes in the 5-6 movies range), or even include the movies it intends to release directly to streaming on Prime Video.
That would be a major increase in output, and 16 releases — it’s unclear if (and unlikely) they’d all...

The retribution visited upon exploiters of seniors by June Squibb in current sleeper hit “Thelma” has but Nerf-ball impact compared to the brass-knuckles style of vengeance practiced by Dale Dickey in “The G.” This considerably less cozy tale has the star as a vinegary veteran of hard living who turns out to be very much the wrong person for organized criminals to safely prey upon.
Canadian writer-director Karl R. Hearne’s second feature recalls much 1970s cinema in its emphasis on gritty character detail over suspense mechanics, resulting in an ostensible thriller that’s not very thrilling. Still, its storytelling has the same grim satisfaction that drives its heroine, a woman who’s not particularly ingratiating but is quite capable of doling out punishment to deserving parties.

Veteran producer Stacey Sher still has love for critically-maligned “Poolman” directed by Chris Pine.
“It’s a gorgeous film. Chris made the movie he set out to make. He believed in it and I believed in Chris. I still do. He’s a really gifted filmmaker.”
Following its Toronto premiere, Pine’s film became one of the worst-reviewed titles last year, with Variety’s Owen Gleiberman calling it “not only the worst film I saw during the fall festival season but would likely be one of the worst films in any year it came out.”
But Sher believes you have to always support your director.
“Yes – if you believe in that person. Quentin Tarantino may have said that to me a long time ago: ‘The reviews of your movies aren’t written the weekend they come out. They are written 10, 20, 30 years after they come out. It’s all about how they endure.

Zack Snyder is many things as a filmmaker. Chief amongst them? The man is ambitious. While the results of those ambitions are often divisive, nobody can deny that Snyder tends to swing for the fences. He didn't just pitch a "Superman" film to Warner Bros. and DC, he pitched a full-on, wild take on the franchise. It didn't exactly pan out but he had big plans. Similarly, in the aftermath of the mess that was "Justice League," Snyder went to Netflix to make the zombie heist flick "Army of the Dead." It was meant to be the start of a big franchise, with sequels, spin-offs, and more to follow. Now, it looks like the franchise is pretty much dead in the water.

Adam Sandler and Josh Safdie are finally reuniting for the screen.
The “Uncut Gems” duo are back for Sandler’s Netflix comedy special, titled “Adam Sandler: Love You.” The special marks Safdie’s comedy-special directorial debut. This is Sandler’s second special for Netflix after his 2018 Emmy-nominated “100% Fresh.”
Sandler was set to star in the Safdie Brothers’ upcoming untitled sports-memorabilia Netflix movie, with Josh Safdie directing solo from a script he co-wrote with brother Benny Safdie. However, the project was stalled in part due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. The untitled feature was slated to be set in the world of sports memorabilia with Megan Thee Stallion co-starring alongside Sandler.
Sandler, who has an overall production deal with Netflix, told Collider in 2023 that he was unsure of the status of the project.

Steven Soderbergh returned to Sundance in 2024 with indie horror film “Presence.” Now, the feature will be haunting theaters one year later thanks to distributor Neon.
“Presence” centers on a family of four, played by Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Eddy Maday, and Callina Liang, who move into a haunted house after a real estate agent (Julia Fox) convinces them it’s the perfect property. Liang’s character Chloe quickly realizes there is a titular presence that may or may not be sinister, though…

/Film previously reported that, on the set of Shawn Levy's new superhero flick "Deadpool & Wolverine," grown men were breaking down crying on set. It seems that nine previous films to star Hugh Jackman as the X-Man Wolverine weren't enough to reach them on the level of "D&w," as Wolverine was never seen wearing the bright yellow-and-blue costume he typically wore in the pages of Marvel Comics. Evidently, seeing Jackman in a well-designed Wolverine outfit made some men so wistful of their childhood comics-reading days, that they wept openly. On a certain level, superheroes really are little more than their costumes. Superman, for instance, can't trade his cape for khakis.
An ironic thing about Wolverine's costume, however, is that it doesn't look anything like a wolverine. Wolverines are furry little critters, weighing about 40 pounds, and known for how uncharacteristically strong they are for their size. They also have visible,...

Brace yourselves: “The Babadook” is back.

Enter creepy storybook “The Babadook” and Samuel’s visions just might be stranger than fiction after all.
Daniel Henshall, Tim Purcell, amd Tiffany Lyndall-Knight also star in the 2014 indie film that was produced by Kristina Ceyton and Kristian Moliere. The wait is almost over, “Colin from Accounts” superfans. While the second season of the quirky Aussie comedy has already aired in Australia, U.S. fans have had to wait and wonder when they would get more of their cult favorite series. But Paramount+ has finally set a Season 2 premiere date in the U.S.
The second season aired in Australia on Foxtel, but the U.S. date for the “Colin” Season 2 premiere is Thursday, September 26, and the entire run of eight episodes will be available on Paramount+ all at once. (The first season won two prizes at the Gotham Awards this past January.)
If you haven’t discovered this uniquely Australian comedic gem, you may not realize “Colin from Accounts,” the title character, refers to not a human but a dog. A quirky series of events is set in emotion when Ashley (Harriet Dyer) randomly flashes a guy, Gordon (Patrick Brammall), who’s driving.

As the new poster for his forthcoming movie “Presence” suggests, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh has done it all and then some. The eclectic and prolific filmmaker has pretty much attempted every genre: made popcorn entertainment like the “Ocean’s” and “Magic Mike” trilogies, acclaimed Oscar-winning dramas, comedies, (“The Informant”) compelling and comedic crime dramas, thrillers of all stripes, and low-budget arthouse indies like his career-making debut, “Sex, Lies And Videotape.” And for “Presence,” the filmmaker tackles the sub-genre of the eerie ghost movie, perhaps the closest he’s ever come to making a horror film outside of “Unsane.”

A nerdy way to gauge how old you’re becoming is with film anniversaries. Sometimes, you find out a film is celebrating an anniversary and it just feels like yesterday it was released. Music Box Films has acquired US rights from Film Constellation to Eephus, Carson Lund’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight entry and upcoming New York Film Festival selection.
‘Eephus’: Cannes Review
The distributor plans a nationwide theatrical release followed by home entertainment roll-out.
Eephus takes place in a small-town New England baseball field earmarked for removal as two Sunday league teams face off for the last time. The film takes its name from the Eephus pitch, a rare, high-arcing slow pitch used to deceive hitters.
Keith William Richards, Wayne Diamond and Keith Poulson star and documentarian Frederick Wiseman performs a voice cameo.

“Euphoria” Season 3 might be even more intense, given the seemingly creative carte blanche for the series from network HBO.
“Euphoria” actor Eric Dane told Variety that he is “very happy” to be going into production on the long-awaited third season. HBO confirmed that Season 3 will begin filming in January 2025, with series breakout stars Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer, and the entire principal cast returning.
“I was optimistic that it was going to come back so I’m very happy,” Dane, who plays Elordi’s onscreen father, said. “I know there’s a massive appetite for it out in the marketplace. There’s a huge audience, and I love making it. I love the people I work with. I love working with Sam Levinson. I have a great time. HBO is supportive in allowing us to do whatever the fuck we want to do.”

Heads up, folks: One of the best trailers of 2024 has just dropped.
Jeremy Saulnier, the writer/director behind films like "Green Room" and "Blue Ruin," has returned with "Rebel Ridge," a movie about a guy who is trying to bail his cousin out of jail, but whose life savings is unjustly taken from him by small-town police officers who seem to operate with impunity. After calmly explaining his case and trying to get his money back, the man takes things into his own hands -- and that's when the cops realize they've made a huge mistake: The dude they're harassing used to be a Marine, and he has no intention of meekly putting his tail between his legs and slinking away from this situation. Quite the opposite, actually: The guy becomes a one-man wrecking crew hellbent on justice, and he's going to make them regret ever messing with him in the first place.

What makes the "Borderlands" video game franchise so enduring? For starters, it is a classic looter-shooter that combines the best elements of an open-world map and smooth first-person combat with a narrative embroiled in a singular sense of quirkiness that is difficult to replicate. Set in a dystopian world overrun by hypercapitalism, "Borderlands" effortlessly mixes near-future sociopolitical concerns with humanity's attempts to covet alien architecture, where every playable character emerges as distinct and fleshed-out. It is an experience that demands immersion and replay, as the franchise's roleplay elements feel fresh and audacious with every entry. "Borderlands" succeeds in balancing its brash humor with its more brutal, violent flashpoints, paving the path for a measured narrative that goes hand in hand with the thrill of player versus player (PvP) matches.
Adapting such a distinct video game franchise is a daunting task, but not wholly impossible. Prime Video's recent "Fallout" series is...

On July 14, Universal Pictures’ marketing team was entering the final stretch of its campaign for summer hit “Twisters” — and then it captured lightning in a bottle.
Amid a grueling day of back-to-back interviews, Daisy Edgar-Jones, who plays the film’s heroine, grabbed her co-stars Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos and taught them the Charli Xcx “Apple” dance. Sensing that something special was unfolding, the actress summoned a cameraman to record the action and uploaded a clip to her Instagram account. The trio’s dance on the Burbank lot went viral. Edgar-Jones’ post garnered nearly 10 million views, while Ramos’ TikTok version topped 18 million. Even the “Apple” singer, who is unaffiliated with the movie, reposted the “Twisters” stars’ moves. Unlike most marketing endeavors, this one wasn’t concocted by a team of studio executives. It was one of many “Twisters” moments devised by the lead actress alone.

Good news, Disney: Hulu, which you now own outright, may very well be worth more than you thought! Bad news: You’re going to have to pay up for it.
In November 2023, NBCUniversal exercised an option that forced Disney to buy out its 33 percent share in the general-entertainment streaming service Hulu, which was originally formed as a joint venture between Fox, NBC, and ABC. CBS, with CBS All Access (which would turn into Paramount+), wanted no part of the party. So the three participating broadcast networks were equal partners — until Disney bought most of Fox’s assets in a blockbuster $71 billion deal that closed in 2019. (The acquisition was announced in 2017.)
Suddenly, Disney had a controlling interest in Hulu, which means NBCU had no real say in how it ran their joint business. For a short while, NBC played ball. After launching Peacock, however, NBC saw no need for a minority stake in another streamer.

Lisandro Alonso’s first film in almost 10 years is also his second film starring Viggo Mortensen. “Eureka,” a time-spanning meditation on Indigenous communities, reunites the Argentine filmmaker with the star of his 2014 expressionist myth “Jauja.” And like that elliptical anti-Western about a Danish father and daughter on a colonial journey in Argentina, “Eureka” is another movie best pitched for the patient or for those attuned to, in the words of Variety’s Guy Lodge, “ambient pleasures.” IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer for “Eureka” below ahead of its release from Film Movement in theaters this September. Watch below.

Several veterans from around the entertainment industry have banded together to shake up the horror and sci-fi space. As was first announced at this year's San Diego Comic-Con (via The Hollywood Reporter), Panick Entertainment is a new horror and sci-fi production company. Its focus will specifically be in the genre space, with plans to prioritize publishing and making films, TV shows, and games.
The company was founded by a team of comic industry veterans, including Kris Longo, who is heading up the company. Adam Schlagman (DC Comics), Mark McCann, Doug Pasko ("The Outpost"), and C. Christopher Chiang (DC Comics) are also part of the venture. The first project coming from the company is a new five-issue horror comic from David Dastmalchian of "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" and "Dune" fame. He'll be writing this currently untitled revenge tale alongside Leah Kilpatrick.
