What can I say... I like this one. Warm palette, punchy and vibrant colors, and a neutral composition that works. With the shallow DOF, it brings attention to the white pollen sacs which to have a liveliness to them. The white and yellow color combinations seem to work quite nicely, with the white contrasting well and standing out.
It looks like the bee is catching a few zzz's after a hard day's work. Too bad its head is slightly outside the focus zone. Next time play around with the aperature settings and see how each one brings a different effect to the picture. This picture has an abstract quality to it with the bee and the pollen sacs floating above the yellow/orange petals of the flower. Quite an interesting perspective.

beautious marysue, obviously the technical side of it has been covered, i agree, blah blah sharper etc etc dof etc etc, but the cool trick you may not have used which worked for me whence i used to chase bees is letting the "motor drive" run off a few shots in a row, as many as possible really, so the lil guy moves thru the ideal DOF you have available somewhere in the shot, you edit which one, bang - melikes the implied color schematics too~

Well captured shot. I like the DOF. This gives a feeling that the whole stuff in floating in space.. A smaller aperture than 2.8 would have taken that effect away. I prefer this one.

John, that is a good suggestion. I used f2.8 because it was late in the day and i needed a fast shutter in the late light since those bees were always moving. However, I now realize (doh) that I could have bumped the ISO up and maybe been able to shoot with a better aperture.
Thanks for the reminder. (As I slap my hand on my head, lol!)

I like this but see that you have only used f2.8.... I wonder what 5.6 or 8 would have looked like? Seems to me a bit more DOF would have been OK this close..

When we (in Europe) think of Texas, by ignorance in most of the cases, we do not thin of flowers and bees, or splendorous nature, as you show in your portfolio (a true festival of colours). Very, very beautiful work, yours... and sorry for any bad english, ok? :-(

great image, however, I too would have liked a bit more DOF. Why do those darn bees always hide their heads just as the shutter clicks?

Wow Mary this is great - a floral abstract and a insect capture all at once. Nice work.
For me a touch more DOF but it is great regardless.
