Depression Era Apple Candy Pie

- 5 cups apples, peeled, cored and sliced (enough to fill casserole 3/4 way!) shopping list
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice shopping list
- 1 cup all-purpose flour shopping list
- 1 cup either unbleached cane sugar OR brown sugar shopping list
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon shopping list
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened shopping list
- 3/4 cup chopped hickory nuts OR chopped pecans shopping list
How to make it
- Preheat oven to350 degrees F.
- Fill medium sized casserole dish 3/4 full of prepared apples.
- Add the lemon juice and stir.
- In separate bowl mix the flour, sugar, cinnamon, butter and nuts until crumbly.
- Sprinkle mixture over top of apples in casserole.
- DO NOT STIR.
- Bake for 45 minutes.
- Increase oven temperature to 450 degrees F.
- Allow pie to brown quickly.
- It can be served hot or cold.
- If you like, you may pour cream over the top.
