How to make it

  • In a large bowl, cream together: shortening and white sugar until smooth
  • Beat in eggs one at a time
  • Stir in milk and vanilla
  • Combine with flour, baking powder and salt, stir into the creamed mixture. (sift dry ingredients for best result)
  • Cover & chill for at least an hour
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Lightly grease cookie sheet or use parchment paper
  • Roll out dough to 1/4 thickness on lightly floured surface
  • Cut desired shapes
  • Place cookies about 1 1/2 inches apart on cookie sheet
  • Bake 6 to 8 minutes - do not wait for them to brown ... take them out with a very slight browning underneath or no brown at all
  • Let cookies rest on cookie sheet for 2 minutes
  • Cool on wire rack completely before frosting
  • ------------------------------------
  • Frosting
  • In a small bowl cream butter and vanilla together
  • Add confectioner's sugar, mix with spatula
  • Mix in milk one tablespoon at a time until desired consistency - may add more than 3 tablespoons
  • Stir in food color in desired
  • Decorate cookies, dry on wire racks or wax paper

This is so near the recipe - even the frosting - that I was famous for years ago when my children were small, that I know these cookies have got to be great!! These cookies went to school, church, doctor's offices, etc. and I baked them for many people because they wanted them too!! (every holiday)In fact, I was just asked for the recipe by another generation of bakers a few months ago. **LOL** I gave it a 5. Hugs and Blessings. - Linda

These cookies were a hit at my son's preschool Christmas party, they were all gone in an instant. I had so much fun making them, I'm off to make another batch because the ones I made are all gone and they were supposed to last till Christmas holidays!! I tried to keep them quite thick when I rolled them out so they stayed really soft. Merry Christmas everyone and enjoy these awesome cookies.
