Whatever amount of the cake mix you feel comfortable with, and yes. Do the cake topping the way you like the best.

do you only use half of the yellow cake mix? could you mix the melted butter with the cake mix and spread it over the apple filling and then bake it? just wondering.

oh if you make it, you can't stop eating it. Its delicious, I try to only make it on special occasions.
