Matar Pea Curry
From atariq123 15 years agoIngredients
- Matar or peas (English peas fresh or frozen) - 2 Lbs or 1 Kg shopping list
- onion - 1 large shopping list
- tomatoes - 2 large shopping list
- ginger garlic paste - 2 tsp shopping list
- Green Chillies/ jalapenos - 2 medium shopping list
- Crushed Red Chillies - 1 tsp shopping list
- cumin seeds - 2 tsp shopping list
- coriander powder - 2 tsp shopping list
- salt to taste shopping list
- cilantro leaves - for garnish shopping list
- butter / desi ghee or vegetable oil - 1/2 Cup shopping list
How to make it
- Thaw the English peas for 2 min in the microwave or shell fresh peas (in which case make sure you have about 4 lbs to start with so that you will end up with 2 lbs of shelled peas).
- In a small chopper chop peas (with green chillies) coarsely (be careful not to turn them into a paste). You'll have some peas crushed totally, some half and some may still be whole - that is okay.
- In a large nonstick pan melt butter / oil and add sliced onion, cook until light brown, add ginger garlic paste and fry for another min or two.
- Add sliced tomatoes and cook to a paste i.e. another 15 min or so. Add salt, red chillies, cumin, coriander powder and fry for 30 sec.
- Add peas, mix well and cook on med low heat for 1-2 hours depending on preference and donness. I normally cook on low for 2 hours.
- This is a dry curry, so do not add water. Sprinkle with cilantro and enjoy with naan and tomato chutney (that is what we did yesterday :)
