Why do great novels, poems and plays move us and excite us? How can they change the way we look at ourselves and the world? What do these authors have to teach us? Why do they matter? There are no better answers to these questions than those provided by the authors themselves. We want to let them speak. Professing Literature is not a broad summary of major works. Instead, it will zero in on one or two key passages, looking at them closely in order to figure out what is at stake. The goal will be to appreciate an author’s brilliance by seeing him or her in action. We will unpack key phrases, images and metaphors and we will consider the techniques the writer uses to make ideas come alive.

Join author John King for eclectic interviews with writers from a variety of genres, including fiction writing, poetry, memoirs, and journalism. From literature to genre writing to the movies, all writing is up for discussion. In particular, The Drunken Odyssey features discussion of all aspects of the writing process—not just the published manuscript, pristinely presented to the entire literate world, but also the scrawled notes and tortured drafts that lead writers there. In long-form interviews, writers discuss their process and the way that writing has influenced their lives. Besides this interview, each episode also features a short memoir essay from a writer about a beloved book, plus John King responds to listener’s questions and observations about the writing (and the drinking) life. The Divine Comedy (Italian: Commedia, later christened “Divina” by Giovanni Boccaccio), written by Dante Alighieri between 1308 and his death in 1321, is widely considered the central epic poem of Italian literature, the last great work of literature of the Middle Ages and the first great work of the Renaissance. A culmination of the medieval world-view of the afterlife, it establishes the Tuscan dialect in which it is written as the Italian standard, and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature. The Divine Comedy is composed of three canticas (or “cantiche”) — Inferno (Hell), Purgatorio (Purgatory), and Paradiso (Paradise) — composed each of 33 cantos (or “canti”). The very first canto serves as an introduction to the poem and is generally not considered to be part of the first cantica, bringing the total number of cantos to 100.The poet tells in the first person his travel through the three realms of the dead, lasting during the Easter Triduum in the spring of 1300.

The Deer Tracks podcast is a place where creativity lives. Where our longings, our delights, our disappointments, and our passions are breathed out: marking the trail of our journey. These are the tracks we make and the ones we follow to find the deepest parts of ourselves: our true selves. During each episode, you will hear echoes of the past as well as current voices through discussions about and performances of creative works. Our goal is to build community and inspire others in their creative pursuits which is why we invite our listeners to submit their work for the opportunity of hearing it on a future episode or seeing it on our blog site by sending them [email protected]. All submissions must be appropriate for a general audience and should be original work. You can submit a recording of yourself performing your work, or you can submit the words to have James perform it; all we ask is that recordings run no longer than four minutes and thirty seconds or submissions to be read are no longer than one thousand words. Exceptions can be made based on literary form but as a general rule, we ask that submissions abide by the above criteria. For further questions, you can email those to the above email address.

“Good fences make good neighbors...” If, as a reader, this is one line you do remember, then the poet Robert Frost would have fulfilled his purpose. The highest goal of a poet, he claimed, was to “lodge a few poems where they would be hard to get rid of...” Unforgettable lines and indelible memories are connected with our encounters with America's best-loved and most popular poet. His wonderful pictures of rural life and the deeply philosophical insights they offer remain with us long after many others have faded. Selected Poems by Robert Frost is a collection of eight poems, long and short, which provide a glimpse of his magnificent body of work. He published several collections of poetry, plays, prose works and his letters have also been compiled into notable collections. Robert Frost is the only poet to have won four Pulitzer Prizes for poetry. His style is a blend of simple language, depth, gentle humor and an enduring appeal to readers of all ages because of the universal themes he tackles. Frost explores the depths of human loneliness and how the answer to that lies in surrendering to Nature. Some of the poems included in Selected Poems are Mending Wall, A Late Walk, Home Burial and Pasture. The poems in this selection may not be the best known works, like Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening, The Road not Taken or A Boy's Will. Perhaps these works have become far too familiar and prevent readers from enjoying other equally lovely poems. Some poems like Stopping by the Woods... have become so familiar because they were quoted by President Kennedy at his inauguration in 1961. In fact, Frost was Kennedy's favorite poet and the two shared a warm friendship. There are many recordings of Frost reading some of his own poems and it is indeed a unique experience to hear the words spoken in the way the poet imagined them. A wonderful keepsake for your collection!

Join writer and host, Jill Hodge, as she shares her creative self-care journey through a soulful mashup of storytelling, spoken word poetry, and music. Part self-help/part performing arts, this podcast explores personal growth through a creative lens. Through an immersive backdrop of music and soundscapes, Jill explores a variety of practices and tools drawn from positive psychology like mindfulness, positive reframing, gratitude, and creative flow.
Dive into creative self-care techniques such as journal writing and affirmation meditations. You’ll find journal prompts at the end of every episode to guide your own self-reflection. This podcast was born out of the struggle (and then insight) that Jill experienced as she dealt with her mother’s ailing health. She turned to creative expression for comfort and discovered the life-changing ways that it revealed a path toward a more purposeful life. In verse form: “I thought I’d lost myself along a road that was seldom straight or supple, but after the broken shards fell away, I glimpsed the undergrowth. From every tear that had fallen, nestled in life’s rich soil, there sprang a stalk, now entangled and evergreen. Exhausted, I rested under the lush canopy. This is my story.” Let Jill inspire your creative self-care journey as she shares her “reflections from the bright side of the beat” and join this growing community by connecting with her at

Hi there from Joni B. Cole, author of "Good Naked: Reflections on How to Write More, Write Better, and Be Happier." This podcast gives me the chance to ask notable authors about what they write, how they write, and why they write. Plus, I throw in the odd question or two to help us get to know each author a little bit better as a person. Eavesdrop along with a new episode every Thursday.
