Today Funcom's senior producer and director Ragnar Tørnquist lifted the curtain on the MMO developer and publisher's brand-new MMORPG, The Secret World. In a press release that went out this morning, Tørnquist gave up the first details, concerning how the game will mix modern-day Earth with monsters, dark occult magic, and special powers.
"It is great to finally be able to talk about The Secret World, after several years in the dark," says senior producer and director Ragnar Tørnquist.

"The real world is such a rich and fascinating setting for an MMO, and we are able to draw inspiration from ancient history, stories of lost cities and forgotten civilizations, folktales, urban legends, conspiracy theories and pop culture.
Players will be able to explore real-life locations such as London, New York and Seoul as they attempt to uncover legends and myths from our own history.

Funcom is aiming to expand on current MMORPG conventions by introducing gameplay which is not based around levels or classes. The official website has launched, where updates will be posted going forward.

Bryn says: I've got to hand it to Funcom -- it's a company that's not afraid to keep on trying to squeeze something new and different out of the MMORPG space. The Secret World sounds like it's going to do something new, but will it be able to sit comfortably in the overcrowded MMORPG genre?

Age of Conan was (is) fighting against World of Warcraft and Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning for a player base, but perhaps this different take will have more success.
